SpongeBob's voice actor explains why he thinks the character is 'autistic'

Voice actor Tom Kenny shares his thoughts on what he thinks his character SpongeBob SquarePants' “superpower” is.
As captured in a video shared on ToonHive Twitter AccountDuring a recent speech at Motor City Comic Con 2024 in Detroit, Kenny spoke about the first time he spoke to a fan about SpongeBob's neurodivergence.
“SpongeBob is also an autistic character,” he told the cheering crowd. “It was the first time I’d ever been asked that question, and someone who was clearly autistic came up to me and said, ‘I have a question for you, Tom Kenny. Is SpongeBob autistic? Is SpongeBob himself autistic as a character?’”

He remembers telling the fan, “Sure!” Then, he continued, “I said, 'You know what? It's his superpower, just like it's your superpower.'”
This isn't the first time Kenny has spoken publicly about his thoughts on the character's neurodivergence. He previously said on Marc Maron's What is this ? podcast In 2012, “I don't know what it is about this show that speaks to kids who are autistic, but more than other cartoons… because SpongeBob as a character is a little bit autistic. Obsessed with his work, very hardworking, he gets really, really deeply involved in something.”

Kenny has lent his voice to the title character since the beloved animated series began airing in 1999. In 2019, Kenny said in a Weekly Entertainment oral history celebrating the series' 20th anniversary that he always felt close to the character.
“I felt like I had been [SpongeBob]” he said at the time. “Steve [Hillenburg, series creator] “I did a really good job. Everything was perfect. I'm like, 'Oh, I know this guy. I can play this guy.' I feel like there's a common DNA between me and this character. We all felt that. That's part of what makes Steve so brilliant. He seemed pretty sure of his decisions once he made them, and he couldn't be dissuaded.”
And he shared his thoughts on the show's legacy and his joy at being a part of it 20 years later, saying: “Spongebobis one of the last remaining super-visual cartoons. There aren't many shows like that left. In a way, I feel like I'm working in a time machine. Like I'm working on a radio show orLooney TunesIt's pretty cool that we can still be employed as milkmen in 2019.
