SpongeBob Has Autism, Says Voice Actor Tom Kenny: 'Of Course He Does'
Tom Kenny, the actor who voices SpongeBob SquarePants, has revealed that the animated character has autism.
Kenny, 62, recently spoke at Motor City Comic Con 2024 in Detroit and told fans about a moment he confirmed SpongeBob's diagnosis.
“SpongeBob is also an autistic character,” he said in a video from ToonHive's X account shared Tuesday.
“The last convention I went to in McAllen, Texas, was the first time I was asked that question,” Kenny continued. “A person who was clearly autistic came up to me and said, ‘I have a question for you, Tom Kenny. Is SpongeBob autistic?’”
“I said, 'Yeah, sure. Of course he is,'” the comedian recalled. “I said, 'You know what? It's his superpower, just like it's your superpower.'”
Kenny has been voicing SpongeBob SquarePants on the beloved animated series since it first aired in 1999.
He has won two Daytime Emmy Awards and Annie Award for his work on the series.
The first time Kenny spoke about his character being neurodivergent was in 2012 on the Podcast “WTF with Marc Maron”.
“I don't know what it is about this show that speaks to autistic kids, but more than other cartoons…because SpongeBob as a character is a little bit autistic,” Kenny said at the time.
“Obsessed with his work, very hardworking, he really, really gets involved in something.”
In 2019, Kenny said he had always felt a kinship with the cartoon sponge.
“I felt like I had been [SpongeBob],” he said Weekly Entertainment“I'm like, 'Oh, I know this guy. I can play this guy.' I feel like there's a common DNA between me and this character.”
He continued: “We all felt that. It's part of Steve [Hillenburg]“His genius. He seemed quite sure of his decisions once he had made them, and he could not be dissuaded.”
“SpongeBob SquarePants” was created by the late Hillenburg, who died of IF at 57 years old in November 2018.
Earlier that year, Kenny spoke about Hillenburg's accomplishments The television producer was honored by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences at the 45th annual Daytime Emmy Awards.
“Around 1997, Stephen Hillenburg showed me some drawings he had done for a show he was considering pitching to Nickelodeon about a kind-hearted sponge, his dim-witted starfish friend, a greedy crab chef, a grumpy squid neighbor, a tiny nemesis, and a Texas squirrel gone underwater,” Kenny said in his speech.
“I know, I've seen it before, right? I fell in love with it immediately, and it seems like other people did too,” he added.
“SpongeBob’s vocal chords may be mine, but SpongeBob’s playful spirit and gentle energy, his humor and the joy he finds in his vibrant, colorful, music-filled world come 100 percent directly from my good friend, Mr. Stephen Hillenburg,” Kenny said.
“SpongeBob SquarePants” is in its 14th season on Nickelodeon. It has been renewed for season 15 Last year.
