Editor’s Note: With the Pennsy Trail Art Fair & Music Festival happening this weekend, the Daily Reporter caught up with Kim Hall to learn more about the history of the event and what to expect this year. Hall is the executive director of Mental Health Partners of Hancock County. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at the Hancock County Courthouse Plaza and American Legion Place.
Daily Reporter: How long has the Pennsy Trail Art Fair & Music Festival been a tradition?
Kim Hall: The Pennsy Trail Art Fair & Music Festival began in 1998. The festival is the sole fundraiser for Mental Health Partners of Hancock County. We also see it as our way of giving back to the community by providing an event with entertainment, food, and art for all ages. The festival began in what is now Depot Street Park and on the Pennsy Trail. The Pennsy Trail was new and not as popular as it is now. The festival grew with vendors and attendees and was moved to the current location, Courthouse Plaza and American Legion Place in 2016. The Pennsy Trail is now heavily used and the festival has been moved away from the trail to ensure everyone’s safety.
DR: How has the festival evolved?
KH: The festival has grown significantly. In 2015, we only had about 30 vendors in total. This year, we have over 60 art vendors and 6 food trucks.
DR: What kind of entertainment will be available?
KH: Entertainment begins at 9:00 AM with the Willow Branch Band playing until 10:30 AM. Denver Crull will play from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. Hearts Ablaze Cloggers will be performing on the street at noon. Occasional Blues Band will play from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM. Cavalear will play from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The day ends with the Ducky Derby Raffle at 5:00 PM. Try your luck and purchase a rubber duck. Ducks are placed in the fountain at the gazebo and drawn for prizes. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. We offer an assortment of prizes including Kings Island tickets and a variety of museum tickets.
DR: What kind of vendors will be present downtown?
KH: We have six food trucks. Dalforno Pizza is offering brick oven pizza. JM Sweet Shack is offering fried Snickers. Cast Iron Grill will be offering filet mignon and a variety of fried foods. LILMAR will be offering pork skewers, fried rice and a variety of choices. Pops Kettle Corn and Kona Ice will also be there. We have authors, painters, potters, photographers, jewelry – all kinds of art to choose from.
DR: What benefits does this bring to Mental Health Partners?
KH: This year, the proceeds will benefit our Student Counseling Assistance Program – SCAP. This program provides financial assistance to children so they can receive mental health counseling.
DR: What do you like most about this festival?
KH: My favorite part of the festival is seeing all the different talent that is there. I have a hard time choosing what to buy. I tend to buy a lot at Pennsy Festival!
