Shanksville Community Picnic to be held August 2nd and 3rd
SHANKSVILLE Since 1930, Shanksvilles Community Picnic has drawn crowds for good food, live music and wholesome family fun.
The 2024 picnic, sponsored by the Shanksville Volunteer Fire Department, will be held Aug. 2-3 at Community Grove, 1291 Cornerstone Road, next to Shanksville-Stonycreek School.

The celebration begins when the food, games and music open at 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2. Popular acoustic duo Partners in Crime, featuring Shanksville grad Gary Miller, Class of 1973, will perform from 4 to 6 p.m. A parade on Main Street kicks off at 6 p.m.
FAST of the Alleghenies sponsors aerial rides on the LaVale Fire Department's aerial ladder truck immediately following the parade in the school parking lot.

“Anyone can get on the ladder truck and climb up onto the platform where an experienced firefighter will be there to tie them in,” said Karl Glessner, treasurer of the Shanksville Fire Department. “They will then climb up to get a bird’s eye view of the people in the grove.”
From 7:00 to 9:30 p.m. there will be a free concert by nationally known band Bon Journey, performing the best of Journey and Bon Jovi music. It is recommended that concert-goers bring a chair or blanket to sit on at the concert.
“Bon Journey is back by popular demand,” Glessner said.

The concession stand will feature hamburgers, hot dogs, popcorn chicken, fresh-cut fries, baked beans and other favorite side dishes, cold drinks and hand-dipped ice cream.
On Saturdays, the kitchen opens at 11 a.m., serving barbecue chicken and a wide variety of pies sold by the slice, in addition to all the items on the Friday night menu.
Saturday’s activities include a massive basket raffle that will feature Steelers tickets, a gun raffle, games of skill and chance held throughout the day and a horseshoe tossing contest with cash prizes sponsored by Stonycreek Builders Supply. Registration for horseshoes begins at noon and competition begins at 1 p.m.
By popular demand, the Shanksville-Stonycreek High School Alumni Reunion is back. All Shanksville graduates are invited to meet and reminisce at the community picnic throughout the day on Saturday.
“Last year’s reunion was the first and it started with the graduates of the classes of 1960 through 1970,” Glessner said. “Now any graduate of Shanksville School can come and bring their memories. Last year’s reunion went really well.”
Last year, alumna Dian Spagnola came up with the idea to hold the class reunion during the picnic, said Karl's wife, Donna.
“In many places, meetings aren’t happening anymore. People really wanted the opportunity to get together,” she said. “She created an event for people to come back and get together. It was very comforting.”
Children will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with an ambulance or fire truck, and use a real fire hose. They will also be able to climb, jump and slide in the inflatable race, and play dime toss and other games.

Saturday's live music program begins with the Somerset County Community Band at noon, followed by local favorite Country Express from 2 to 5 p.m. The headline act, who will take the stage from 6 to 9 p.m. for a free concert, is national recording artist Leroy Burks Band from Washington, D.C. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to enjoy this concert.
“People are saying that Saturday music is more important than ever,” Donna Glessner said. “Saturday we have the Community Band and a country band that we think will appeal to a different audience. We have Leroy Burks, a very patriotic man who was drawn to Shanksville because of 9/11. I think he’ll have a band that people will enjoy.”
And, new this year, stroll through the grove to see 19 banners honoring community service members who were killed in action or died non-combat while serving. Picnic visitors can stroll through the community to see a total of 134 military banners spanning the period from World War I to the Global War on Terror.
“It’s a special memorial,” Glessner said.
The community picnic is a fundraiser for the volunteer fire department, helping to pay for operating expenses, training and major equipment upgrades.
“We want to extend a huge thank you to the fire department and community members who contribute year after year to make this event a success,” said Karl Glessner. “They help us with the cooking and the games. We couldn’t do it without them.”
