The Wood County Fair this year will feature sharks and stingrays as well as micro-wrestling.

There are so many exciting things happening at the fair this year, said Jessica Nagel, one of the fair's board directors.

A free family recreation area will include a petting zoo, shark pool and the chance to touch stingrays.

The touch pools will be open from Tuesday to Sunday and the caregivers will provide several meals per day.

“I’m really excited about sharks and stingrays,” Nagel said.

A free tent will be set up on the grass in front of the administrative building and will offer daily activities.

A religious service will be held on Sunday, followed by gospel music.

A children's craft day will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. while barn games such as ball toss and three-legged races will take place Tuesday.

Wednesday will feature STEM activities from the Penta Career Center from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Perrysburg is also bringing its fire safety house.

A farmers market is planned for Thursday while a play day for young children and families will be offered Friday, so parents can come, sit down and kids can play games, Nagel said.

The former elephant ear stand nearby is now a picnic shelter with a fresh concrete floor.

The Wood County Board of Developmental Disabilities is sponsoring Thursday’s fair with activities planned for people with disabilities in the racehorse tent on the west side of the racetrack. There will also be a sensory room in the junior fair building.

Senior Day has been postponed until Tuesday, Nagel said.

Three free concerts are scheduled at The Grove, including national recording artist Emily Ann Roberts, Blues Brothers tribute band The Sensational Soul Brothers, and tribute bands American Foreigner (Foreigner) and More Than a Feeling (Boston).

Nagel said the board chooses fair entertainment at the Ohio Fair Managers Association conference in Columbus.

We were trying to find a different entertainment that could attract people to the fair, she said of booking micro-wrestling.

Be a Star at the Wood County Fair is this year's theme with rockets decorating various displays and buildings as the fair continues to mark this year's solar eclipse.

The Fine Arts building will become a children's area with a space-themed coloring wall, where kids can draw their own selfies, and a story time at 2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Copies of each day's book will be given to the first 25 families.

We really wanted to focus on free activities that families could do that focused on education, Nagel said.

She said current and former teachers who sit on the senior fair's board wanted the focus to be on education.

A coloring contest, a corn pit and a carpet culture with agricultural equipment will be set up in the Grange building.

Children can pretend to farm, Nagel said.
