Actor Abhay Deol Abhay Deol has stated that he rejects the “Western way” of identifying sexuality and believes in operating without any labels, which exist primarily for the convenience of others in order to “neatly categorize” an individual. When asked how he perceives sexuality, he replied “as a spectrum”. Abhay has stated that he rejects the Western way of identifying sexuality because “it's so black and white”.

“The Eastern approach is so different, it acknowledges us in our entirety. I don’t define my sexuality, and this may sound controversial, but for me, it’s not something that can be defined. I think it’s more for the other person’s comfort, so they can put you in a box, classify you neatly. Why should I define myself in Western terms? I’ve embraced all the experiences in my life and I continue to do so. I don’t know how to label it, I don’t want to. We all have a masculine and a feminine in us, so in my opinion, we are all them,” he said in an interview with Dirty Magazine.

For Abhay, star of films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dev D and Oye Lucky Lucky Oye, masculinity is the “ability to make people feel safe and included”. The actor said that as a man, he feels like a “protector and provider”, which he believes could either be an individual experience or “conditioning”.

“But there is a sense of responsibility and leadership. That said, I would be happy to give way to a woman if she wanted to take charge and lead, that is also part of my masculinity.”

When it was pointed out that his views did not make him a “toxic” man, Abhay added: “It is very easy to provoke through violence and sex, it is much harder to provoke through silence. How can I provoke you by not saying anything? That is what interests me.”
