Javed Akhtar opens up about his alcoholism; says he became offensive, like a devil had come out: I wasted a decade of my life | Bollywood News

Seasoned screenwriter Javed Akhtar recounts his battle with the bottlewhich he said stunted his growth in his prime. Akhtar, who remains one of the country's greatest screenwriters, spoke about his alcoholism and said that if he could turn back time, he would ask his younger self to never touch the bottle as he “wasted” at least a “decade” dealing with it.

In an interview with Be A Man, Yaar, Javed Akhtar was asked if he took to alcohol because he had repressed emotions. The writer replied that it could have been the case as he became a “devil” after getting drunk.

“Maybe I had some pent-up emotions, anger, bitterness. That’s why after drinking I would become quite aggressive, which I would not be and would never have become. It would never happen to me in my sober moments. But hello, someone is out, another devil (when I was drunk, a devil would come out of me).

“Among the few good things I have done in life is that I have given up drinking alcohol. July 31, 1991, was the last time I drank. I never had a sip of champagne after that. Not even during the cheers of the party,” he said in the interview. When host Nikhil Taneja asked the 79-year-old what he would tell his younger self, Akhtar replied, “I would tell him that the 20-25 years he drank alcohol, he shouldn’t do that.” The writer said he could have used his time better if he had stayed away from the bottles.

“We have lost a lot of time. “I think I wasted at least a decade of my life, when I could have done much more, but because of all this, I wasted it. I could have done so many things, learned a musical instrument, another language like French or Persian. I had the time and the means, but I wasted my time, which is not a good thing. I had to learn much more,” he added.

In a previous interview, his wife, actress Shabana Azmi, had spoken about the time when Javed Akhtar drank excessively and described this phase as “difficult”. In a conversation with Arbaaz Khan for The Invincibles, Shabana recalled how Javed quit drinking.

“He knew that if I kept going like this, I wouldn’t live long and I wouldn’t be able to do my job creatively,” she recalls. Talking about the day Javed announced he was quitting drinking, Shabana says: “We were in a flat in London. He reeked of alcohol and I said oh my god, this is going to be one of those trips. Very quietly, he said to me: Make me breakfast. He had breakfast and after that, he said: I’m not drinking anymore.”
