A recent study conducted by happn reveals some surprising insights into the dating world. While ‘Street Foodie’ appeals to the masses, especially men, ‘Manga & Anime’ has a niche appeal among Indian singles.
Universal call
Forget diamonds, in India, the love for chai is eternal. This delicious beverage has emerged as the top choice for all ages and genders, with women aged 36 and above showing the highest preference (75%).
Age is just a number (Except when it comes to F1)
While the term “Street Foodie” is a universal success, especially among men (78% among 26-35 year olds and 82% among 36 and over), the “F1 Fanatic” flag seems to be more proudly brandished by millennial women (24% in the 26-35 and 25% in the 36+ age groups).
Generation Z is educating itself
The happn survey found that Gen Z women were more likely to embrace Spotify playlist swapping (36%) and Camping (36%) as a hobby, while men of the same age group gravitated towards games (39%). It seems that swapping stories around a campfire for reading lists is the new way to bond.
Red flag alert
When it comes to deal breakers, both men and women agree that munching on “sweet popcorn” and declaring yourself “gossip queen” are major deal breakers. 50% women in the 36+ group found the gossip queen to be a big red flag while men (33%) in the same age group can't get past the choice of sweet popcorn. Telling spoilers by accident? This is more of a concern for younger women (43%) than men. And while “Punjabi Party Playlist” may seem harmless, it does raise a few eyebrows among some dating enthusiasts, especially women aged 36 and over (25%).

The survey also revealed some interesting personality quirks. “Night Owl” emerged as the most defining hobby, especially for Gen Z men (77%) and men in the 26-35 age group (81%). On the other hand, women aged 36 and over (75%) were more likely to identify as “couch potatoes.”

The survey also asked users what hobbies they would be happiest to see their partner doing. Here, Bollywood Lover (49%) and the plant's parent (25%) received first place in all age groups and genders.
Pop Culture Passions and Specialty Hobbies
90s Bollywood fans rejoice, this category showed strong preference, especially among women aged 26-35 (41%). Interestingly, “Mythology Nerds” generated particular interest among men aged 36 and over (33%). Women aged 26 to 35 (24%) and 36+ women (25%) are more likely to connect over news podcasts and immerse themselves in documentaries.
