James Bond actor George Lazenby officially retires from showbiz

George Lazenby's next project could be From Florida With Love.

The 84-year-old actor, who played British superspy James Bond only once, in On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969, announced Thursday that he was leaving show business for good.

“It was not an easy decision, but it is time to announce my retirement, Lazenby said in a statement on Instagram.

Therefore, I will no longer be doing comedy, public appearances, interviews or autograph signings from today onwards.

The actor added: “It's been a fun ride, but getting old is not fun.

When Sean Connery left the 007 franchise after 1967's You Only Live Twice, Lazenby, an Australian model with no stage experience, was the surprising choice of producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman to wield the Walther PPK next.

“You know, it’s just part of me,” Lazenby told The Post in 2017. “I don’t know why it happened.”

During the audition, Lazenby secretly prepared by visiting Connery's hairdresser and tailor to imitate the Scotsman's iconic look. And he outright lied to the producers, claiming that he did, in fact, know how to act.

I had an appointment with Peter Hunt [the director] and I told him I hadn't told the truth, Lazenby said. I had never acted before in my life, and I was ready to leave at that point. And Peter burst out laughing and ran into the room holding his stomach.

“You say you can't act? You fooled two of the most ruthless men I've ever met in my life,” Lazenby recalled Hunt saying. “Stick to your story and I'll make you the next James Bond.”

The actor was paid only $50,000 for the work.

Then, swept up in the counterculture of the late 1960s and growing a beard far removed from James Bond's, Lazenby left behind the glamour, gadgets and gin and vodka martinis.

His wild journey is depicted in the 2017 Hulu documentary Becoming Bond.

He appeared in some 64 projects during his career, such as Gettysburg in 1993 and The Kentucky Fried Movie in 1977, but no role was ever as major as that of Bond.
