Yamashiro Restaurant and Surrounding Properties in Hollywood Now for Sale
HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The famous Yamashiro restaurant and its surrounding properties in Hollywood are on the market with a high price tag.
The 7.3-acre complex with panoramic views of Los Angeles is one of the most iconic landmarks steeped in Hollywood's rich history.
“It's truly one of the unique assets in the world,” said Chris Bonbright, managing director of real estate firm Avison Young.
The German-born Bernhimer brothers began building the hilltop mansion, nicknamed Hollywood Mountain, to display their Asian art collection in 1911, according to the restaurant's website.
Yamashiro, which means “mountain palace” in Japanese, could sell for more than $100 million. The complex includes more than 280,000 square feet of additional land that could be developed.
Bonbright says the current complex includes Yamashisha Lounge, Flowering Tree Cafe, Hollywood Hills Hotel and Hollywood Residences.
Although Yamashiro is home to some of the oldest Japanese-designed architectural structures in the state, it has also served as the backdrop for many Hollywood films, including “Nocturnal Animals,” “Kill Bill” and “Gone in Sixty Seconds.”
In 2008, Yamashiro became a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument, giving the property preservation protections.
“You can make changes, but you have to go through a designer review process and get approval from the city,” said Adrian Scott Fine, president and CEO of the Los Angeles Conservancy.
“If someone were to propose doing something that would be detrimental to Yamashiro or even contemplate demolition, which we hope would never have been the case, that would be a very difficult challenge to get approved,” Fine said.
According to the LA Conservancy, the building was nearly demolished in the 1940s. However, the real estate company says the restaurant isn't going anywhere regardless of the outcome of the sale.
