Something in the Water October Dates Set; Pharrell Film Premieres
VIRGINIA BEACH — Dates for Pharrell Williams' Something in the Water festival have been confirmed, according to the Virginia Beach Hotel Association.
Concerts will be held on the beach on Oct. 12 and 13, the association's executive director, Terri Wiley, wrote in an email to members Tuesday afternoon. The Virginian-Pilot obtained the email after WVEC announced the dates.
“Something in the Water dates are being released and will take place the weekend of October 11, 2024,” Wiley wrote in the email. “There will be beachside concerts on Saturday, October 12 and Sunday, October 13. There will also be the world premiere of Pharrell’s new film that weekend. The film chronicles Pharrell’s childhood in Virginia and Virginia Beach.”
Wiley then wrote, “There will be activities along the waterfront, in waterfront parks, and in other areas of the city. Details will be released soon, but we wanted to give our members time to plan once we know the date. VBHA Hotel members look forward to the return of SITW and welcome SITW back to the city!”
The popular festival, founded by rapper, mogul and Virginia Beach native Williams, last took place in April 2023.
This year, the date has been moved to the fall and will coincide with the release of Pharrell's new film, “Piece by Piece,” which will use Lego animation.
Promoters of Something in the Water plan to post a “creative” save-the-date type post on social media today, according to Robby Wells, the Virginia Beach-based festival organizer.
The festival attracts some of the biggest names in music.
Last year, hip-hop legends Lil' Wayne, Busta Rhymes, De La Soul and Williams performed, as well as new-generation artists like Lil' Yachty and Lil' Durk. The festival features a wide variety of musical genres, including the Jonas Brothers, indie rockers Arcade Fire and jazz saxophonist Kamasi Washington.
In December, The Pilot reported that October 2024 was a likely date for the next festival. After weather disrupted the 2023 festival, Williams wrote in a letter to fans that he wanted to move the festival to another season due to a greater likelihood of better weather, adding that there would be “more shows, more merchandise, more food… just more!”
The Something in the Water event was originally scheduled for the weekend of Oct. 18, said John Uhrin, a former city council member and manager of the Schooner Inn hotel in Oceanfront. Organizers recently canceled the rooms, however, Uhrin said.
The Schooner Inn is next to the concert's main stage on 5th Street and has provided rooms to festival workers in the past, Uhrin said.
It is now adapting to the last minute date change.
“I contacted the developer for rooms,” Uhrin said. “But I’ve already sold two-thirds of the building. What’s left, I’m keeping for the workers. We’re happy to have them back.”
