Hollywood video game actors to go on strike to protest AI and wages

Video game voice actors and motion capture artists have called a strike over failed contract negotiations focused on AI protections for workers, sparking another work stoppage in Hollywood.
SAG-AFTRA has called a strike under the Interactive Media Agreement, which covers video game artists, beginning July 26, the union said Thursday.
The move follows months of negotiations with major video game companies including Activision Productions, Electronic Arts, Epic Games, Take-Two Interactive, Disney Character Voices and Warner Bros. Discoveries WB Games.
The interactive media agreement expired in November 2022 and was extended on a month-to-month basis during negotiations.
Although agreements have been reached on many issues important to SAG-AFTRA members, employers refuse to clearly state, in clear and enforceable language, that they will protect all performers covered by this contract in their AI language, the union said in a statement.
SAG-AFTRA also represents film and television actors who went on strike last July over concerns about insufficient safeguards against artificial intelligence (AI), putting Hollywood in the midst of two simultaneous work stoppages for the first time in 63 years.
Aside from AI protections, SAG-AFTRA's most pressing issues in contract negotiations for video game artists are higher wages, health care and breaks for motion capture artists.
SAG-AFTRA is seeking to raise salaries for video game actors, saying their pay has not kept pace with inflation, and is calling for more protections for motion capture actors who wear markers or sensors on their skin or in suits to help game designers create character movements.
“We are disappointed that the union has chosen to walk away when we are so close to an agreement, and we remain ready to resume negotiations. We have already reached agreement on 24 of the 25 proposals, including historic wage increases and additional safety provisions,” said Audrey Cooling, a spokeswoman for the video game producers party to the Interactive Media Agreement.
The offer presented to SAG-AFTRA includes AI protections that include requiring consent and fair compensation for all performers working under the IMA, Cooling said.
