Abhay Deol has always sought to strike a balance between the mainstream and the alternative. The actor has admitted that he actively defends the portrayal of his characters and makes changes wherever necessary. This is his way of challenging the film industry, for which he has been labelled as politically incorrect and a rebel. However, after spending some time away from commercial cinema, where does Abhay Deol stand today?

“I can be politically incorrect, but I ask myself for what purpose. What is my purpose, my goal? I have always challenged the industry. Whether it was supporting racist products or the rights of musicians and producers, or changing the narrative of what kind of films and characters we present and why. I did a lot of that early in my career because I wanted to make space for someone like me. So I was politically incorrect at the time, but I wasn’t trying to be. I wanted to be as authentic as possible. People say I was a rebel, but it served me well. It got me to where I am. It brought me respect and I was able to make the films I wanted to make,” Abhay told Dirty Magazine.

He added: “You can’t be the same person at 35 that you were at 25, or the same person at 45 that you were at 35, hopefully. We’re all afraid of change, but change is natural, change is necessary. You know the saying that no man is an island? That really struck me because I realized I wasn’t building any bridges. If you want to lead, you can’t push people into a corner, because then you isolate them and if you corner them, they’ll corner you at some point. If you take a hard stand and aren’t prepared to negotiate, you’ll always be remembered as that man, but that would be the end of you. And that’s the challenge to your ego: Can you still hold on to those ideals and still engage in the world? I’d better face the enemy if I have to.”

Abhay added that his rebellion has now taken on another dimension. He said, “I always want to make films that speak truth and pave the way for new kinds of narratives. It’s a quieter kind of rebellion. I may not get the fame, but I will get work that is true to who I am. I’m not an activist, I’m an actor. You have to choose which one you want to be because you can’t be both. I’ve learnt that.”

Abhay Deol will be making his comeback in Faraz Arif Ansari's directorial venture Bun Tikki. Abhay said that the script of Bun Tikki was his favourite of his career. It's a nice mix of mainstream and alternative films, which is how I would describe most of the films I've worked on. DevD, Oye Lucky, Socha Na Tha, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, all these, I used to call them mid-range films, now I say mainstream meets alternative. But this one has a bigger impact, he said.
