Redd Kross at El Club, 5 Things to Know – The Oakland Press
Steven McDonald was still a teenager when he and his older brother Jeff formed Redd Kross in Hawthorne, California, also known as the home of the Beach Boys. It's safe to say they didn't expect the band to still be going strong 45 years later.
And the quartet is certainly celebrating this anniversary.
The band released a documentary, “Born Innocent: The Redd Kross Story,” which has been touring festivals, and a band biography, “Now You're One of Us: The Incredible Story of Redd Kross,” which is due out in October. The band also released a new self-titled album, its first in five years, in late June.
The McDonalds and their current bandmates — guitarist Jason Shapiro and drummer Dale Crover (also of the Melvins) — are also on the road now, and the younger McDonald is confident that Redd Kross will be around to celebrate more anniversaries in the future…
• McDonald, 57, says things at Redd Kross, 45 years later, “aren't as different as you might think. I guess there's a kind of wisdom of experience, of not worrying about the little details, stuff like that. But at the same time, it's still kind of a thrill, like when I was a kid. It's still really fresh… I guess it's because I still care a lot about it, so I'm not so jaded and you can go and do a show and it's still really exhilarating… which makes me happy.”
• For the “Red Kross” album, McDonald says the band wrote a solid 18 songs for “Red Kross,” including a title track for the documentary. But they were surprised that all of the tracks passed the quality control test. “We were like, ‘We’re going to do 14 of these with the idea that two of them are going to be bonus tracks for foreign territories or something.’ But when we were picking the songs to put out, it was hard to let go. So it turned into something like, ‘Let’s record these other songs,’ and eventually it was like, ‘…they’re all good. Let’s do them all and put them out there.’”
• McDonald says he and his brother were further inspired after watching Peter Jackson’s critically acclaimed “Get Back” documentary series about the Beatles’ recording sessions in London in January 1970. “It was… relatable, that’s the best word I can think of. You could tell they were just people, and… it was very demystifying and it was great to hear them work on a song from scratch and sound squeaky and ramshackle and realize that even though they may be the greatest rock band of all time, they were also human and had to work hard to get there. It reminded us that it was a good thing when we started rehearsing for our new album. There’s always an uphill climb.”
• The Redd Kross album was produced by former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, with whom Steven McDonald had worked in Sparks. “It was really special. We're siblings and we can get into power struggles. But with Josh by our side, we were really on the right track, and it was great to give such a strong voice to someone else. I always wondered what it would be like to be with someone I really respect, musically, and to let go of some of that (responsibility). It was a challenge maybe, but in the end, I'm lucky enough to realize how lucky we were to be in that situation.”
• McDonald calls this the “third act” of Redd Kross’ career, and he has big ambitions for what he hopes the band will accomplish from here. “I want it to be filled with the best things we’ve ever done—making the best music we’ve ever made and playing the best shows we’ve ever done and becoming as cohesive as I’ve ever dreamed we could be. What we may lack in the freedom of youth, we now have the wisdom to fall back on, and things that were confusing to me, I don’t question anymore. It’s not always going to work out the way we want it to, but I think I’m better equipped to roll with the punches than I ever was, which allows me to enjoy the good things that come along. That’s the antidote to aging, I think.”
Redd Kross will perform Tuesday, July 30 at the El Club, 4114 Vernor Highway, Detroit. Doors open at 7 p.m. (313)757-7942 or elclubdetroit.com.
