Rock Entertainment and Gray Media Partner for Charge, the Monsters TV Home
Cleveland's minor league sports teams will get their moment in the spotlight with the launch of the Rock Entertainment Sports Network, a partnership between Gray Media, owner of WOIO (Channel 19) and WUAB (Channel 43), and the Rock entertainment group.
REG owns the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League and the Cleveland Charge of the NBA G-League. The network, which will air 24 hours a day in the Cleveland and Cincinnati metropolitan areas, will be the live home of those teams and will eventually include streaming.
Cincinnati will receive the basic feed and will have the ability to substitute local programming when it becomes available, said David Hughes, WUAB vice president and general manager.
The channel will also carry Frontier Leagues Laker Erie Crushers games and St. Edward High School games. It will air on subchannel 22.1 with plans to eventually be carried on cable networks throughout the region.

Additional programming will include programs from other local colleges, high schools and professional teams.
Is this a potential backup solution for Cleveland Cavaliers broadcasts?
This last element might represent nothing or something significant in the future.
With the fate of Diamond Sports Group, which operates the two Bally Sports regional sports networks in northeast Ohio, still pending due to bankruptcy proceedings In a Houston federal court, the fate of local broadcasts could be at stake.
Although Diamond is apparently close to reaching deals with the NBA and NHL that will allow them to emerge from bankruptcy as a viable home for teams in those leagues.
The move by Rock could help establish the infrastructure needed to transition to creating programming for a team like the Cavs and broadcasting games.
“All I can tell you about that is they’re under contract right now and their rights are not available,” Hughes said. “And what I can tell you from my perspective is that my goal and Great Media’s goal is for this network to be the home of sports and the state of Ohio. We started with four different teams and we’re excited to grow that aggressively. And this is just the beginning of what this network will be, at least that’s what we hope.”
Gray Media already broadcasts games from the NBA's Phoenix Suns and the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury. They also produced a few Cavs games last season.
Peachtree Network serves as model
They set the model for what they could do with the Peachtree Sports Network in Georgia, which features live games and programming from a number of Atlanta's professional and high school teams, including the Atlanta Hawks and the WNBA Atlanta Dream. They launched the channel last fall.
What's different, Hughes said, is the partnership with Rock Entertainment. Gray is the head of the Peachtree network.

More Northeast Ohio High School Football May Be Available
St. Edward's appearance in the initial programming does not mean that its programs will be the only source of programming for high schools.
In this area, Hughes senses a significant opportunity simply because of the nature of high school football fans in Northeast Ohio.
“People love football in this community and part of that is because we have incredible talent that comes from this area,” Hughes said. “And I think that’s why we see the success of our high school teams. I think that’s why we see the success of universities like Ohio State and it starts with the passion of the fans.”
He said he would prefer programming in that area to go beyond just covering the game of the week.
We're starting with 10 St Ed's games, but hopefully we'll have a lot more games outside of that, he said, and we'll be actively talking to athletes, directors, coaches and boosters over the next few weeks to see what we can line up.
