CLEVELAND, Ohio – Talk about making the most of a tough situation.

Having to settle for doing its show virtually, Shining Star CLE 2020 dazzled viewers with a sparkling presentation on Sunday night (September 13), topped off with the announcement of Chardon High School senior Ethan Peterson as the first place winner. .

The Shining Star CLE Finals performance and competition each year features 10 of the region’s top high school singers competing for college scholarships.

The event benefits dementia and memory care programs and services at Menorah Park, a senior health care provider with several independent and assisted residences in Beachwood; and The Weils of Menorah Park, a seniors campus in Chagrin Falls.

The funds also benefit the Menorah Park Center 4 Brain Health resource center and Home Smart Memory Care, a home memory care program.

Show host Monica Robins, senior healthcare correspondent for WKYC-TV / Channel 3 and lead singer for two local groups, revealed at the end of the hour and 45 minute show that the The event has so far raised over $ 431,000 in sponsorships and donations.

The first three CLE Shining Star Finals were played live before the sold-out audience at the Mimi Ohio Theater in Playhouse Square. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the singers had recently pre-recorded their performances at Clockwork 9 studios in Cleveland.

Julia Mullin, an Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary High School, finished second and won a $ 5,000 scholarship for her performance of She Used to be Mine by actress Waitress.

Third place, Calista Zajac, a sophomore at Rocky River Magnificat High School, performed Funny Girl’s Dont Rain On My Parade to receive a $ 2,500 scholarship.

Elena Flauto, a senior at Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown High School, placed fourth and won a $ 1,000 scholarship for her version of Ray Charles’ classic, Georgia on My Mind.

The evening began with the performances of 10 finalists. A panel of six musically accomplished judges reduced the field to the bottom four. After parts of their performances were re-broadcast, viewers helped the judges determine the final order of arrival by texting a number representing their favorite artist.

The 2020 Shining Star CLE competition began when nearly 150 students representing 73 high schools from seven counties (Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage and Summit) submitted online video auditions for the first round from April 1 to April 1. July. Two rounds of the competition – via Zoom because of COVID-19 – then determined the 10 finalists in mid-August.
