Review: Amazons the Boys are back in town bloodier, steamier and more relevant than ever

No one knew what to expect from Amazons The Boys in 2019, especially in an oversaturated market for comic book content, with many wondering if the Prime Original could stand out from an already filled year of superhero media. .

However, upon release, The Boys proved to be a giant breath of fresh air.

The show quickly became one of the top rated / aired shows of the Amazons, making Season 2 almost guaranteed.

Instead of ditching the entire season in one overdose, Amazon decided to release the first three episodes together and each subsequent episode one week apart.

Season 2 picks up a bit after the explosive end of last season. The titular boys Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mothers Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) are now all wanted criminals.

If that wasn’t enough, their leader, Billy Butcher (Karl Urban) is missing after his attempt to defeat Homelander (Toni Starr).

Unsurprisingly, however, the Butchers are quick to return, as they continue their quest to defeat The Seven and their evil backers, Vought Industries, now led by the stern Stan Edgar (Giancarlo Esposito).

While the boys still have Starlight’s (Erin Moriarty) secret aide on their side, their plates will be full this season as they take on the newest member of The Seven.

Needless to say, all eyes were on The Boys this season, seeing how the final season ended in great detail, as well as the fact that the series had already been given the green light for a third season even before these. three episodes are dropped.

Thankfully, as of those three episodes, this season not only delivers on many of last season’s promises, but it’s already on track to outperform its predecessor. Right off the bat, Season 2 raises the stakes in every way. From production value, to performance, to story, and most importantly in visual effects, which already had a high bar set up from season 1.

While it’s a bit of a cliché, and often the fault of many second seasons, to try a previous season doing the same thing but bigger, these three episodes are a good example of bigger being better.

What stands out here is the performances, these talented actors being able to play the most despicable of characters, but still giving us reasons to love them. The boys all continue to have great chemistry and their interactions here really sell that they come together as fellow comrades, although they should be prepared to bail out if things go wrong.

Karl Urban continues to be the bearer of obscenity as the Butcher and really works on the calmer, gentler Hughie who is slowly falling apart from everything that has been endured so far.

Toni Starrs Homelander is still the scene thief, owning every second on screen. Like last season, Starr juggles perfectly between being a friendly public icon and a vicious, blood-hungry sociopath who’s ready to laser-see anyone who dares get in his way.

While the returning cast is one thing, the new cast is also shining and promising to take this season in remarkably interesting directions. Aya Cash absolutely crushes her as the sex-bent Stormfront of the comics. Similar to Homelander, even though we know they’re the bad guys, they play the character so likable that their turn is really shocking.

In Episode 3, Stormfront cements himself as a terrifying new villain. Esposito also plays a formidable and demanding villain role, as always, and can still manage to be the most intimidating guy in the room despite being standing with a homicidal Superman. Another element that continues to be successful is social commentary. In the first three episodes, the season addresses issues such as: feminism, sects, LGBTQ + and body image

Overall, despite being only three episodes, The Boys Season 2 delivers everything the previous season promised and should surpass the already high standard set for it.

This season offers character growth with many new additions to an already stacked cast, an engaging overall story filled with its fair share of violent twists, and more relevant social commentary than ever before.

The Boys Season 2 is a welcome continuation of an already excellent first season and promises to be even bloodier and better in every way, and these first three episodes certainly prove that claim to be true.

The Boys is available on Amazon Prime to stream.
