A returning champion against another former winner sets up the possibility of a new winner for the lead actor in a drama series, but there are a few veterans in the mix who have 13 acting Emmy nods between them and no wins, so sentiment might be a factor. There’s also a brilliant Scottish-born star whose time may have come after being Golden Globed – but he’s got a newbie co-star to face. Who will it be? Here’s a look at the contenders and who gets the Pete’s Winner Pick stamp.
Between this series and Development stopped, Bateman has had five lead actor nominations, and last year won the Emmy for Directing with his Ozark episode “The Toll”. This year he is not in the running for the achievement category but has two nods, one for Ozark and another for guest actor in a beginner’s drama series The foreigner. Because Ozark has been sampled so extensively this year, and due to his exposure on the other series, Bateman is clearly respected by his peers, so don’t count him.
What Succession’s rebellious son Jeremy Strong learned from working with Daniel Day-Lewis, and how Kendall Roy ultimately became a killer
Sterling K. Brown
Brown won for that series, in the same category in 2017, after winning a Supporting Male Emmy the previous year for The people against OJ Simpson. This is his fourth consecutive nomination in this category for It’s us, and, like Jason Bateman, Brown is a double nominee this year – he’s also recognized for his supporting role in a comedy series for The wonderful Mrs. Maisel. Another win here seems unlikely, however, as the Emmy heat for It’s usseems to be decreasing.
The morning show
The big shock in this category was the omission of You better call SaulBob Odenkirk, and that snub may be due to Carell, who landed his first bid in the Drama Series race for his predatory anchor in The morning show. Let’s face it, after losing six times as a lead comedy actor in Office, Emmy voters owe him one, but his character here was pretty despicable. The cast, however, might recognize the average feat of going so far against the guy for this sympathetic and talented funnyman.
Coming from a Golden Globe win, not having seen Emmy glory since the miniseries Nuremberg Nearly two decades ago, Cox was riding a wave of recent success as a Rupert Murdoch-type mogul on this critically acclaimed show. The only downside is that he’s pitted against an equally talented co-star (Jeremy Strong) playing one of his sons. The severity of the play, however, and Cox’s veteran status could potentially help him get over that.
No one has achieved a more popular and, for some, surprising Emmys victory last year than this Tony-winning star who arrived and immediately conquered television with a revolutionary role in Pose who clearly channeled the zeitgeist. He could repeat the victory here if only because voters might want to see what he is wearing, however virtual the show is.
Strong is fascinating as the ambitious and duplicity son of the dreaded Brian Cox Patriarch in this water cooler smash. It’s Strong’s first nomination, and he’s always been memorable in a number of movie roles, but it means he has to compete directly with Cox. I suggest you take a look back at what Jodie Comer achieved last year in her shocking win for Kill Eve… There is a good chance that this dynamic will repeat itself here.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
A crowded field – eight nominees – could cause massive crowding on the Emmy Freeway, since three of them are from Succession and two are from The morning show. There is a reasonable chance for each of this Succession trio (Cousin Greg of Nicholas Braun, Tom Wambsgans of Matthew Macfadyen, and perhaps most notably Roman Roy of Kieran Culkin), but will they just cancel each other out? Three is a crowd, mate.
The pair of The morning show—Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass – could also crash and burn due to competition from each other. This leaves three contenders on a clearer path to victory, including Westworld veterinarian Jeffrey Wright, Bradley Whitford for The Handmaid’s Tale, and Giancarlo Esposito – inexplicably replacing the only acting nod for You better call Saul this year. Esposito, however, is also a guest actor nominated for The Mandalorian, and might have better luck there. Yes Westworld was more buzzing this season, I could tell it was Wright’s time for the win, but Whitford – a three-time winner for three different shows – seems to have Emmy number.
The winner: Bradley Whitford, The Handmaid’s Tale
