Pajamas at the Emmys? What Hollywood Will Wear – WWD

“Virtual comfort.”

It’s the unofficial dress code for this year’s Emmy Awards, says celebrity stylist Micaela Erlanger. She is dressing Meryl Streep – nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for “Big Little Lies” – for the digital ceremony, which airs Sunday. “I think we’ll see a lot of fancy pajamas.”

“All the stars and half the glamor,” jokes Tracee Ellis Ross in an awards promo, which was filmed at 114 locations (salons?) Around the world.

The show’s organizers were the first to offer sleepwear rather than evening wear. “Come as you are but make an effort,” noted a letter which some sources said was sent to applicants by the Television Academy. Although the organization prides itself on dressing, “so if you’re in the UK and it’s 3am, maybe you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed?” the suggested missive.

It’s easy to imagine the night’s host Jimmy Kimmel stepping out in his pajamas for a laugh for his opening monologue. And glam pajamas have certainly been a fashion trend – any time of the day – for a while now. Tilda Swinton stepped out as a pair this month at the Venice Film Festival, wearing a silk-belted green top and blue Haider Ackermann stockings.

“Chic pajamas still take a bit of effort,” says stylist Elizabeth Stewart, who works with “Mrs. US candidate Cate Blanchett, adding that American socialite Babe Paley invented the chic pajama trend.

The likely choice of jammies, however, is first-time nominee and “Euphoria” star Zendaya, who works with stylist Law Roach.

“I want to dress,” she told actor Ben Platt when he hosted Jimmy Kimmel Live! August 20. Zendaya is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series alongside Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer, Laura Linney, Olivia Colman and Jennifer Aniston. “I still want to live the experience. You know, it’ll probably be my family here, but I really want to take a look and maybe just walk on the carpet in my living room.

The focus will likely be on “size” given the circumstances, Erlanger says. “Because how else would they do it digitally? I don’t know if they will be able to capture the whole people. “

Expect things to “show up on camera,” says the stylist, who has a partnership with Platinum Born. “We will especially see a highlight on the jewelry, because it’s all in the neckline. It’s about framing the face … necklaces, earrings. I think we’ll see more colors, more unique prints, interesting details, bling… but you’re not necessarily going to bring out the big guns in jewelry. (A note for the holiday season – get your Zoom bling ready.)

There is undoubtedly a less and less stylish approach these days, due to the impact of the health crisis. With forest fires and raging storms, sustainability can also be brought to the fore, as it did in the last award round and at the Venice Film Festival, where Blanchett led the charge of reuse and re-dress on the red carpet.

“Who says you have to wear something new?” Erlanger said. “Can’t you wear something that was worn by someone else?” Why can’t you wear something you’ve worn before and love? You know, I really believe that kind of old concept, the outdated concept that it has to be the newest, newest, best thing, is going to be gone out the window.

For years, the industry has adopted a “more is more is more mindset,” says Erin Walsh, whose clients Thandie Newton and Mark Ruffalo are Emmy nominees this year. The stylist now takes a different approach to her work.

“It has been extremely rewarding to find the best with fewer options, with less waste,” she continues. “For all the shots I have done and even sometimes with clients, I have offered fewer options, but great, innovative and exciting options. I have certainly reconnected with what I do and why in a whole different way, and that means more.

Stylist Jill Lincoln can understand.

“It just really got less over the top than it was, which is a good thing, because it was sometimes bordering on insanity with what we were going to see,” Lincoln says. “It brings us back to a place where we stylize again. We don’t just dress ourselves up, you know?

She and her business partner Jordan Johnson work with ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ actress and Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan, who is nominated again this year for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.

“We’re thinking about which room in her house she’s going to zoom in, Skype or whatever,” Lincoln says of Brosnahan. “How do we want her to look when she’s sitting on her couch at home?”

This is the question she, like all stylists, keeps asking herself.

“We were playing with fabrics, and [Rachel] was like, “I’ll probably be in this room during the Emmys,” and so we were like, “Oh maybe this fabric would work a little better in this room,” Johnson said.

They collaborate on a custom design for Brosnahan, although the look “tells a stronger story than just, ‘Here she’s on the red carpet wearing a couture gown and pretty jewelry,'” adds Lincoln. “We are working with someone who might not be expected, someone who is very well connected in our world. Rachel is very philanthropic, and Jordan and I are really important to us. ”

Given the state of the world, with many unemployed, the Black Lives Matter movement and the upcoming presidential elections, there might be more thinking in the looks this year. There could be bold political statements and charity partnerships between stars and designers, perhaps with the RAD (Red Carpet Advocacy) or Chic Relief group, which collaborated on a fashion auction for a charity in Venice.

“The general consensus is that people feel a little uncomfortable going too far…” said Walsh. The reality is, “They will be sitting on their couch at home.” Just like the rest of us.
