Actresses defend Bollywood in crisis, where are our male superstars?

Having followed the Hindi film industry closely since I was a child, I can’t think of any other time Bollywood has been the target of so much hate. Yes, there were controversies around the cast, disproportionate little cat fights by gossip magazines that divided the fanbase or occasional films like Padmaavat, which shook a specific community or political group to the point that a big prize was placed on the head of its lead actress. Even the #MeToo movement did not spark outrage that lasted for months and to this extent. Curiously, in its most difficult phase for many years, it is the actresses who are rising up to defend the industry. Where are all of our male superstars?

It looks like the men – Khans, Kapoors and other industry stuff are just bidding on their time, waiting for the problem to arise so they can sneak into a mega-blockbuster version.

The death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput has unraveled the rage on social media, which continues to hit Bollywood in waves. The outrage began with allegations of nepotism and favoritism in the industry. Producers like Karan Johar and actors like Alia Bhat and Ananya Panday were the recipients of this reaction. Right now we are hovering over the industry drug abuse debate and it has found its way into the Indian parliament.

Whether on social networks, news channels or even Lok Sabha, these are actresses fighting tooth and nail for Bollywood. Actors like Taapsee Pannu, Swara Bhaskar, Konkona Sen-Sharma and Richa chaddha have been quite vocal in questioning the cost at which everyone seems to demand justice from Rajput, and whether it is fair to bring people in industry to justice without any evidence. In Lok Sabha, MP and former actor Jaya bachchan gave an exciting piece calling out to the people in the industry who had turned it on. She was supported by a member of another party and a veteran actor Hema Malini. To learn more, click here.

These women have proven to be more than larger than life cutouts placed outside a movie theater.

In her twisted way, Kangana Ranaut also speaks on behalf of a certain section of the industry, which she claims to be otherized by privileged industry insiders. Is her position relevant, or is she just adding more fuel to the fire, is open to discussion. But one cannot ignore the fact that Ranaut has taken a firm stand for what she believes is right. Once again, where are the reigning male superstars of Bollywood? Why have they neither openly condemned nepotism nor displayed their love for the industry?

It looks like the Khans, Kapoors, and the rest of the industry are just bidding their time, waiting for the problem to erupt so they can sneak into a mega-blockbuster version.. What’s the point of getting into unnecessary controversy, when you can clearly get away with a superhit movie, which audiences will be watching anyway. We pay attention to those who speak up for and against an issue, do we pay a lot of attention to those who don’t speak up at all?

I know it’s unfair to force a comment from anyone, especially in a hostile place like social media, against their will. But given that the actresses did speak out and braved the negative reactions that came their way, it became imperative that we applaud them. These women have proven to be more than larger than life cutouts placed outside a movie theater. They have guts, they have the courage to speak out and the will to participate in a debate, which makes them human, and therefore easier to understand.

If only social media and the public could keep all of this in mind, once our theaters reopen.

Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence.
