Director Mike Binder talks about the club’s darkness
Just for Laughs? Barely.
Showtime’s five-part docu-series “The comedy store, “(Sunday, 10 EDT / PDT), doesn’t just highlight the howls from the greats of the iconic Sunset Strip establishment: Richard Pryor, Robin Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Sam Kinison and new Joe Biden impersonator , Jim Carrey The series also delves into the dark days of the comedy club, its stand-up battles with alcohol and drug abuse and a few premature deaths.
Sunday’s premiere introduced the business, Sammy and Mitzi Shore (parents of comedian Pauly Shore) opened with screenwriter Rudy DeLuca in 1972. Mitzi took over in 1974, following the couple’s divorce. “ItsMecca for comedians,” writer-director Mike Binder told USA TODAY. “It’s Juilliard … If you’re a comedian, you’re kinda drawn like a moth to a light.”
Freddie Prinze was one of the souls drawn to the Los Angeles club, launched after his debut in “Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” in 1973. He was only 19 years old.
“Good Times” actor Jimmie Walker says in the docuseries that Prinze, starring in “Chico and the Man,” was kicked from fifteen magazine covers by a feathered hairstylist wearing John Travolta, an escape like Vinnie Barbarino on “Welcome Back, Kotter.” Prinze was so furious, says Walker, that he bought a crossbow and planned to kill Travolta. Walker says he and Prinze went to Travolta’s apartment building, where Prinze shot three arrows in Travolta’s door. (The actor was not home at the time.)

“He would be the nicest guy in the world,” says Walker, “but there were plenty of times he would walk in and panic.”
“I would say, ‘This is getting weird,'” recalls Prinze’s friend, comedian Alan Bursky, on the show. “‘He thinks I’m a spy. He thinks people are listening on the phone because he knows who killed Kennedy …’ No one knew what cocaine psychosis was.”
Binder, 62, says he arrived at the Comedy Store in January 1977, days before Prinze shot himself. Binder didn’t know Prinze, but remembers seeing “everyone cry” at the club. He says it’s important to include the darker moments, like the deaths of Prinze and Kinison, because of the depth to which these losses were felt by the tight-knit community.
“The first thing I thought about was if I want to tell funny stories, I have to tell sad things too, because that’s what makes The Comedy Store so unique,” he says.
“I think The Comedy Store has attracted people who have really embraced the dark side and have embraced filling that hole in us with darkness, drugs and alcohol,” Binder says. “I think The Improv, they were straighter comedians, the Seinfelds, the Paul Reisers and Larry Millerseven (Jay) Leno, it was really more of an Improv. But The Comedy Store, there was a kind of darkness.

“He was one of her children,” recalls Pauly Shore of her mother’s affection for Prinze. “I remember when he fell, I was there at the house with mom, and it was dark. There were several dark moments around the house with these comics, and I think that was another reason why it was really hard for my mom to see me get into stand-up comedy. “
Pauly, 52, remembers how his mother, who died in 2018, really cared about talent. “The comics are, I don’t mean hurt birds, but it was a weird breed,” Pauly says. “So just to feel that kind of love from her… She had a natural instinct to develop and guide someone she thought had something special.”

The “Son in Law” star, who dubbed her mother “Mother Teresaof’s comedy”, remembers “crawling on the floor” of the Comedy Store as a child and being “like a hot potato passed on to various comedians “when his mother was related to work.
Pauly remembers her mother “always at the store. She loved it.” She also opened the doors of her house to stand-ups.
“Shed always has people at home,” he recalls. “It happened a lot when I was young. I would go down there, and you would see Robin Williams there or Richard Pryor or Richard Belzer or Gallagher.”
