Tremonton wins BOSS 2020 for murals on community buildings – Cache Valley Daily

TREMONTON – Tremonton City won the Best of State Statue (BOSS) award for the Arts and Entertainment Division for the murals that adorn many downtown buildings.

The state’s best statue – the BOSS – is awarded to the most outstanding medal winner from each division, the state’s website said. The BOSS (Best of State Statue) is a 20-pound, 24-karat gold-plated solid bronze sculpture set on a black granite pedestal on a gold-plated bronze base. Only Best of State Statue winners can use the Best of State Statue.

Best of State is the brainchild of Mark and Dana Layton of Layton Productions.

Within the Arts and Entertainment Division, there are 51 categories, one of which is public art, and Tremonton City was chosen as the best in the state out of 51 categories, ”said Shawn Warnke, director of the city of Tremonton. The BOSS Trophy weighs 22 pounds and is made of bronze and 24k gold plated and has a granite base. It is surprisingly very heavy.

Jason Nessen, an artist from Wellsville, has spent hours and hours putting his artistic skills to work on the walls of Tremonton buildings. Many of the murals he painted are historical and look like the old photographs he uses to create them.

The city appreciates all the artists and others who have contributed to the city’s public art program; and especially Jason Nessen for his talent and continued efforts in creating murals, said Warnke.

Tremonton City has also received financial support for its public art program from the Box Elder County Tourism Tax Advisory Board and County Commission, Rocky Mountain Power, Union Pacific Railroad, Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Northrop Grumman, and d ‘other.

Murals are popular with residents and visitors. The city has received a lot of positive publicity due to their murals.

The City program, Public Arts, was also supported by the City of Tremonton Arts Council and the direction and leadership of Zach LeFevres, Warnke said. Tremontons public art improved the city streetscape and expanded the city’s reputation in the arts.

While Nessen was busy working on murals at the rodeo grounds, the city approved the contract for Eric Burke from Reno, Nevada, to paint Gail Halvorsen, the Candy Bomber, who grew up in Garland.

Zach LeFevre, executive director of the Arts Council, said he had entered the city’s art in the Best of State competition for the past five years.

There are only 10 Best of State neighborhoods donated each year, LaFevre said. “There are 52 divisions and the judges have been there and picked us the best.

He said they plan to do more murals, at least once a year.

We want to continue to tell the story of our city with murals, he said. We want people to know and love this place.

LaFevre brought the trophy to the city council meeting and surprised council with it.

Gail Halverson’s mural was nearing completion on October 10, for its 100^e one year birthday party. The mural is located on Main Street across from the Veterans Memorial.
