‘Cheer’ star Jerry Harris ready for detention hearing Wednesday – NBC Chicago

Jerry Harris, star of the Netflix documentary series “Cheer,” is scheduled to appear for a detention hearing Wednesday, weeks after being arrested for child pornography in Illinois.

According to the Chicago Tribune, prosecutors are asking that bail be denied for Harris, who was held without bail last month.

Harris was detained by the US Marshal after waiving a previous detention hearing until he could find suitable accommodation if he were to be released on bail.

Harris was arrested and charged with one count of producing child pornography.

According to a criminal complaint, the 21-year-old Napervilleresident is accused of “inciting a minor to produce sexually explicit videos and photos of himself”. The boy referred to in the complaint was 13 at the time, according to the prosecutor’s office.

Harris had been charged with sexual misconduct after being named in a sexual exploitation lawsuit last week.

According to attorney John Manly, two children have filed a federal lawsuit against Harris and the United States All-Star Federation, a cheerleader organization, claiming Harris attempted to initiate sex with the boys.

The mother of my clients found inappropriate texts from Mr. Harris on the child’s phone, involving sex, Manly said.

Harris was a fan favorite of Cheer, who followed the cheerleaders from Navarro College in Corsicana, Texas as they prepared for a national competition.

Navarro Cheer tweeted that he was “devastated by this shocking and unexpected news”.

“Our children must be protected from abuse and exploitation, and we pray hard for the victims and all those affected,” the tweet read. “Please respect our privacy while our family mourns together.”

Manly says Harris has met her clients across the cheerleading world.

Harris’ attorney issued a statement denying the trial allegations, but no statement was made regarding the criminal charges or a potential Harris plea.

(We) categorically dispute the allegations made against Jerry Harris, which allegedly took place as a teenager, the lawyer said. We are confident that when the investigation is completed, the real facts will be revealed.

Manly says Harris was legally an adult when the alleged texts occurred.

He was an adult during this time and took advantage of these children, he said. Frankly, my clients are hoping he will go to jail for what he did.

Producing child pornography charges carries a sentence of up to 30 years in prison, if convicted, according to the US Attorney’s Office.

Late last month, the FBI asked the public for help in identifying possible additional Harris victims.

Investigators are “specifically looking for people who were under 18 when Harris asked them to produce or view sexually graphic images or engage in sexual touching,” the FBI said in a statement.

The agency announced a website where victims can find a contact report with Harris through an online questionnaire, as well as resources.

The FBI said the contact may have taken place in person or through social media accounts linked to Harris, including the Snapchat username “jerry_714” and the Instagram account “__jcoleofficial”.
