The Star Wars book confirms fans’ long-held suspicions as to why people in the Star Wars universe hate droids so much in the original trilogy.
In the original version Star wars, the inhabitants of the galaxy seem to have a widespread dislike and distrust of droids, and a new tidbit of The Star Wars Book confirmed why: the clone wars. Although previously suspected by fans, it’s nice to see official confirmation that the galactic consensus on the droids has in fact changed in response to the various conflicts between the republics and the separatists. The factoid is just one of the many fun canonical additions made by The Star Wars Book.
During the years of galaxy-wide fighting brought on by the Clone Wars, both sides needed massive and easily replenished soldiers, the titular clones on the Republic side and the Separtist droid army, consisting mainly of forces of the Federation of Commerce and the Techno Union. Of course, these two groups weren’t the only ones fighting. Clone wars episodes like the arcs over Umbara and Onderon show united forces on both sides beyond droid / clone armies, though these are usually made up of local fighters on the planets where the fighting took place.

Due to the destruction and suffering that the Droid Army brought to so many systems, it makes sense that many people were especially suspicious during the Empire era. The Star Wars Book confirms this idea, saying that after the war, “Many droids blame for the destruction and suffering of the Clone Wars,” leading to a wave of anti-droid sentiment. This explains some moments in the original trilogy, like when Luke tries to get R2-D2 and C-3PO into the Mos Eisley Cantina, only to be told by the bartender that the droids will have to wait outside because the bar don’t do it serve their kind, and that people don’t want them here.
Even though a world of the Outer Rim like Tatooine would have been largely untouched by the fighting of war, it makes sense that a port city like Mos Eisley reflects public opinion from other parts of the galaxy. A similar distrust was almost surely felt towards the Clones, given that many in the galaxy blamed the Jedi and the Republic for the fighting as much as they blamed the Separatists. However, due to the fact that most of the clones died by A new hope due to accelerated aging, and were subsequently replaced by regular Stormtroopers, this would have been less of a problem. Droids, however, have never ceased to be a key part of Star wars life.
In The Mandalorian season 1, Din Djarins’ mistrust and aversion to droids is explained in the same way. His homeworld was decimated and his family slain by the Separatist droid army, and this traumatic association remains so long after the Clone Wars ended, even until the days of the New Republic. Mando has a bit of an arc during the season when it comes to his relationship with the droids, forming a sort of friendship with the IG unit which is reprogrammed as the Guardian of the Child.
By the time the First Order comes out of the Unknown Regions to fight Leias resistance, some of that lingering negative sentiment seems to have subsided. This makes sense given the time that has passed and the fact that Galactic Citizens seem to have forgotten other pieces of their recent history in much less time, such as the very existence of the Jedi. Of course, there will probably always be people who just don’t trust robots.
