Good Lord Bird recap, episode 3: Mr. Fred

What do we do with a not entirely flattering portrait of an American hero? The Frederick Douglass of our textbooks is a towering icon of strength and verve, a man who escaped slavery and then devoted his substantial intelligence and gathering to personal and political matters: escorting escaped slaves through the Underground Railroad and preach and fundraising to overthrow the whole institution. James McBrides’ Frederick Douglass The good Lord bird Does all of that stuff and he’s as amazing as hell, a groper who stuck Onion and tries to get his hands on his mechanics (thinking, of course, he’s a her), and so full of him – even his swollen head practically floats like a helium balloon.

The Douglass in Ethan Hawkes TV version (played brilliantly by Daveed Diggs, who is no stranger to tousled collars and highfalutin speeches from his Hamilton days) slips somewhere along this spectrum. The show revisits Douglasss’ lust for Onion, but increases the dial of his excitement for his wife, Anna (Tamberla Perry), and her living lover, Ottilie (Lex King), and highlights the great man’s admiration for him. -even. This Douglass is captivated by his own turns of phrase, pulling out a pencil whenever he hears himself say something that might play well with an audience. And his political beliefs are more a question of which woman has his ear than which argument might prove most useful to the cause.

Douglass is put in place in direct dichotomy with Brown. He lives in self-proclaimed splendor, dressed in an abrocade waistcoat and silk tie, while Brown and Onion stumble to the door, stinking of days of travel and country cotton clothes. Brown and Onion made do with a hunted squirrel and boiled nuts on the Kansas plains, while Douglass presides over a table with cut crystal glasses, with servants to inaugurate the various dishes. Brown must fly under the radar (and potentially hide at the entrance to the Douglasss of the Underground Railroad), while the great speaker speaks from the stage. Even their wild hair and bushy beard seem to disagree. (Brown brushing his beard with his fork is a good idea.) Convenience and presentation are paramount to Douglass, his head practically rolls when Onion calls him Mister Fred, and his first order of business is to make sure Onion is dressed worthy of a young woman of his acquaintance. Silk and gentlemen matter, says Douglass. Sure, they inflate it, but they also assert its inherent worth: why would a black man be less worthy of a big salutation than his white counterpart? The cause of the Douglasss is not to bring down the white man, it is to raise the black man.

McBride took the story apart and put it back together in his novel. A German journalist named Ottilie lived with the Douglasses for months (and looked suspiciously like Lex King), but historians have argued that claims that the two were intimate had been dredged up to criticize him. There is certainly nothing to suggest that the two women climbed on top of him in the presence of young children, let alone the fact that a white woman and a black woman turned their domestic dispute into a battle royale over how best to achieve this. to the cause of abolition.

This is not, of course, an argument that the account must conform perfectly to the journals and primary sources of historians. Who the hell wants that? But it’s a note that we see Douglass first through the mind of a black author, then through the vision of a white TV showrunner, and we have to think about what to do with it. It’s not Frederick Douglass, it’s Frederick Douglass On TV.

Then again, The good Lord bird mission is to make us uncomfortable. As Brown states in the statement, he encourages his band of merry rebels to sign: We must light a fuse that will start a great war to end slavery. He will descend in a tide of blood and carnage. These words aren’t just an in-depth prophecy, they perfectly predict Brown’s place in history, they are also a mission statement. Brown is fed up with the slow pace of peaceful and legal battles. There isn’t enough talk in the world to convince slave-owning senators to suddenly give up the financial benefits of free labor and the disgusting mindset they deserve other humans. Brown wants funding for the mysterious Secret Six, which I can assure you will meet up with later for weapons and supplies. He wants to build an army of slaves to rise up against their masters.

But Douglass, Brown’s Negro King, blows him over the dinner table, Oh now you know what the Negro slave needs! Hindsight tells us Brown was right, the road was bloody, but how could he know? And who was he to decide he knew better than a former slave who wrote one of the seminal texts on experiences of life as good?

All this to say that Mr. Fred is pushing our buttons on purpose. Brown, who is almost certainly halfway through the bend, is nicer than ever as he holds this young widowed baby in his arms and falls to his knees, and as he talks to Onion about his late wife, his dead children. , of its financial ruin and its disgrace. . Do you know what I have in my pockets? Sorrow is my wealth. Here’s a man who just lost a son to the cause, begging for money, help, faith, and he sent his bags. When he pushes Onion to get up at the table and ask for money, he’s clearly manipulative, but it’s also wise. Exactly nobody in The good Lord bird perfectly matches the personality that history has created for them.

The episode, however, is stretched and warped into a strange shape. The scenes in the Douglasss Library, with Anna and Ottilie climbing above him, are meant as a running gag, as if Douglass is so charismatic that they can’t help themselves. But both women were accomplished and intelligent, and Anna Douglass ‘reduction, which made Fredericks’ job to a harassing wife possible, rubs the wrong way. The Rivalry of Anna and Ottilies is a one paragraph detail of the book that is embellished in a vital piece of historical infrastructure.

It’s all a bit lumpy, as if the writers love the McBrides spin on Douglass so much that they need to amplify it out of proportion to its place in the story. When the show bounces with as much vigor as the speeches of Douglasss, it propels us on a surreal, absurd and revolutionary adventure. But when he digs too deep, it’s like one of Brown’s prayers, a little windy, a little silly and best when he’s bitten in the bud.
