If you’ve seen Adam Sandlers Hubie Halloween filmed on the North Shore and currently at the top of Netflix’s weekly Top 10 list, you know it’s not exactly what you’d call an instant classic.
In the film, Sandler plays Hubie, a kind, helpful, and extremely socially challenged man who, for some inexplicable reasons, is apparently insulted in his hometown of Salem, Massachusetts. Hubie is intimidated by everyone from Salem Police Chief (Kevin James) to A Local Priest (Michael Chiklis, creepy as always) and a sociopathic narcissist played by Ray Liotta pushes him into an open grave and later attempts to scare him, presumably, to death. Did we mention it was a comedy?
And yet, the movie has times when you might have some fun in spite of yourself, and not just because of locals like Danverss. Dinner at the port. Like when the juvenile delinquents of Salems gradually ramp up their arsenal of projectiles thrown at Hubie as he cycles through town, or when Hubie makes ample use of his Swiss Army thermos, or at Sandler’s inordinate reactions to the spooky decorations Halloween. (As Salem’s life, you’d think his character would be used to them by this point.)
At the end of the day, it’s such a bad, it’s good Halloween movie that is a proven genre staple.
