I liked Netflixs The Trial of the Chicago 7 for the most part. The writing was a bit grand and important, a trend that film writer-director Aaron Sorkin turned into style. But he structured the story of the late 1960s strategically, even though he decided not to care about historical accuracy. And he did not push the relevance of the issues of the political polarization of the trial, the protests and the police into our faces. The film is theatrical, but not pushy.
Two performances jumped out at me throughout the film, one very good, the other, I think, not very good.
As judge Julius Hoffman, Frank Langella has once again shown us why he is one of the best actors. His thirst to condemn young men and his contempt for their lawyers are palpable, and his distaste for black accused Bobby Seale (until the Seales case was declared invalid) is shocking, going so far as he tied up and gagged the Black Panther. .
As we learned once again with the Amy Coney Barrett hearings, we cannot assume that a judge will be impartial and Langella points out Hoffmans bias. His justice has so much right that he does not even try to hide his injustice. He is, in some ways, like a big baby, his hammer is a toy he can’t stop playing with. As the defendants provoke him, he loses his temper, unable to help but participate in their match. They offend him personally. I felt the same after seeing Langella in Starting Out in the Evening; it is a powerhouse.
On the other hand, I was continually distracted by Sacha Baron Cohen as Abbie Hoffman, even though I loved Cohen as both a comedian and a dramatic performer. As is often said, this is a smart cast, as Cohens ‘image as a sardonic clown overlaps with Hoffmans’ image as a sardonic clown. I have the idea. But for me, Cohen never adapted to the rest of the movie. In part, he kept stopping me because of his accent, which never felt quite natural to me. Also, he looked too tall and too old to play Hoffman in his early 30s. I think a lesser-known face might have been a better choice in this case.
