‘Bear hunting’ makes the kids entertaining

Bears are spotted all over South Beach – and they are wonderful.

Teddy bear hunting is taking place in neighborhoods around the world as a fun party for children during a pandemic. Residents place a teddy bear (or other prepared creek) in the front window or porch, easily visible from the street; and families who drive or walk the neighborhood can see how much they can find.

Scenes from San Francisco to New Zealand are reported. Some use the hashtag #GoingOnABearHunt to document their findings. At South Beach they post pictures in a Facebook group started by Robin Lee, called Westport Bear Hunt.

Lee had been reading stories on the internet about other hunts and liked the idea.

“I have several nieces and nephews in the area. They will go crazy and their moms go crazy and go crazy,” she said. “With this I can walk or ride in cars and have fun.”

Lee is amazed by the response on her Facebook group, which had about 225 members on Wednesday morning.

“I had no idea,” she said. “I’ve invited a few people from my friends list and it’s grown so much I can’t stand it!”

For her part, she placed her son’s childhood toy in her window. “This bear has belonged to my son Chase since he was a year and a half. He’s 20.”

At least two people are displaying family followings.

“She was my great-grandmother when he was little, and he was born in 1903,” Kelly Redford of Grayland said of the bear at her window. She usually sits on her bedside table. In its new vault on the front window, it is accompanied by Christmas lights that have recently been redirected to bring joy to their neighborhood.

On the screen is Gail Huggard’s childhood companion, “cocoa.”

“He went with me wherever I went. My grandmother was a professional tailor and made clothes for him,” Huggard said. “As you can tell, he’s a much-loved bear.”

People without bears get into the action by showing off other items – the sock monkey here, the native clown. One is showing a red balloon with a face drawn on it. The caption on that group post: “Sometimes you have to do with what you have.”

Julie Smith of Westport is involved both at home and at work.

“I saw a post about bear hunting in Westport on Facebook and I thought: What a fun activity for the kids, to be able to get out of the house and still be safe,” she said. “I didn’t have a bear, but I put some other stuffed animals in the various windows of my home. I’m also the operations manager at the Westport Maritime Museum, so I went down there and put a few marine animals in the windows.”

Lee on Wednesday announced members of the group to challenge other communities to join the hunt.

“It was really cool to see the different things that people portray and what they mean to them,” Lee said. “It became a way to express themselves during this thing.”
