Isolation Can Be Fun – Opinion – Wellsville Daily Reporter

Okay, so far everyone has gotten a little crazy, and yet it looks like we may have to go head hunting in the long run. I just want other countries to take the COVID-19 virus just as seriously as New York.

I wonder what they think they will do. Will (NY) get rid of the virus only if visitors from countries that haven’t been so careful visit and destroy everything? President Trump spoke about banning New Yorkers from traveling out of state. That didn’t happen. It is a matter of state rights. But you still have to wonder visitors from other countries coming here in the coming months.

We face this difficulty locally, especially in Allegany County where there are many seasonal homes owned by residents of large metropolitan areas. Some fear that it will bring more viruses to the party. Others believe that people who may be fleeing congested and more dangerous areas to their other homes in Allegany County will continue to follow social distance rules. Hopefully they are no more dangerous than many of the products and merchandise that are already coming to the county.

The solution is not, as we know, to build a wall. The solution is to be friendly and less insightful, and to welcome those on the outside with kindness and confidence to do the right thing.

It may look like Armageddon, but it’s not us, most of us, will go through with it. Our prayers go out to those who do not survive.

With that said, I know that there is still controversy over whether it is necessary or advisable for someone to wear a mask in public.

Some people advise seniors with basic conditions to wear a mask when in public. Second opinions hold that the mask protects others more than it protects the wearer. Both opinions are not bad, are they?

I didn’t have a mask so I went to Facebook. Since I wasn’t sewing, I wasn’t looking for a pattern and I was really hoping someone would tell me where I could buy the mask. The first answer was from an old friend who lives in Kentucky and wondered why I was going out. I guess she forgot that I was living alone and had to go out for food, dog food and a cat. I can’t afford to pull out every night and I haven’t tried grocery stores yet.

Anyway, three more people answered my query. The first was said to be wearing a bandanna. Of the other three, one had an additional medical mask and the other two were sewing masks for the hospital. Jane Pinney gave me a medical mask. Deb Thompson gave me a cool pink camo mask she made and Barb Hetzel gave me a white mask from the dozens she donated to the hospital.

Wednesday was mine, I’m not too proud to hide behind a day of masking. After getting gasoline (do you believe the price?) I pulled on a mask and a pair of plastic gloves that I had from serving a long time ago with a chicken grill and headed to the store.

The first problem, I couldn’t see. My breathing behind the mask clouded my glasses. Well that was not good so I tried adjusting my breathing and eventually detached the mask. Second, my gloves kept falling. They are big and my hands are not.

After enduring slightly amused glances (I know people were just jealous because they didn’t have a wear mask or were just plain empty), losing out on my money for oversized gloves, storing things, I finally left the store, Once in my car I took off gloves the right way I learned from the video, took off his mask and Purella’s hands and drove home.

Fun times.

Fun things happen that we can do from the safety and comfort of our homes and cars. The Wellsville Development Corporation is urging people to make Easter eggs and place them in their yards and windows so children can hunt for Easter eggs.

As they walk or move around the block, they can write down or photograph the eggs they have found. No, chocolate bunny or spicy jellyfish are not rewarding, but neither is sugar.

On Christmas Sunday, people from Trinity Lutheran Church invite others to participate in the Palma car parade at 10:00. Anyone can drive in their tidy cars or not, celebrate Palmina.

In Christian religions, Palm Sunday celebrates Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, when believers scattered palm trees along the road ahead. Most churches bless and share palm beards with their congregations.

Because meetings in large crowds, such as religious services, are prohibited, a car parade may just be fun.

People are creative and find interesting ways to have fun during this isolation. It may seem boring, but it is better than the alternatives.
