Centrum facing the new reality
PORT TOWNSEND – It will be an unprecedented summer at Fort Worden State Park.
Centrum, a not-for-profit producer of art and music workshops and festivals, suspends its busiest season until 2021, Executive Director Robert Birman announced this week: Voice Works in June, Fiddle Tunes, the Writers’ Conference and Jazz Port Townsend in July and Acoustic Blues. festival in august will wait all next year.
In the meantime, a newly formed task force will be looking at some sort of summer programming at the fort, said Birman. The team of Centrum programmers and local artists are about to brainstorm ideas such as an expanded series of free Friday concerts at the fort and outdoor movies there – perhaps on big screens which have just been given to
Centrum.
“One of the screens is 55 feet wide. It’s wider than McCurdy [Pavilion] is big, “said Birman, referring to the fort’s largest concert hall.
Next September, the Port Townsend Ukulele Festival could still take place.
“We are still hoping for Ukulele and the fall events will continue,” said Birman.
Another program, albeit a smaller one, to hope for: each autumn, Centrum organizes open studio days with its artists in residence. These events at Fort Worden are open to the public, allowing art lovers to see what the visual artists have created during their month-long stays.
Centrum has opened a call for applications for the October emerging artists residency program, said manager Michelle Hagewood. Details are on Centrum.org; April 30 is the deadline to apply.
The Centrum website will also provide updates on spring and summer events open to the public. Her Communiversity lecture series, which started this year, includes an online discussion April 13 with Robyn Bailey, NestWatch project manager at Cornell Ornithology Lab. As for Centrum’s administrative and production staff, Birman said that 40% of the workforce is laid off; he plans for further downsizing in May, after staff respond to participants who have already registered for the workshops this spring and summer. The summer chamber music shows with the Miro Quartet and the Callisto Trio have already been postponed for the fall and winter, with tickets to honor on these new dates. The choro workshop and Centrum concerts are postponed until next year, so ticket holders will receive refunds.
Hagewood and Birman recognized that this period was extremely difficult for the musicians, workshop participants, service providers and spectators of Centrum – the thousands of people who come to Fort Worden from around the world. All of the artists teaching workshops and festivals have been asked to postpone their contracts for 2021, said Birman, and “practically everyone has accepted this.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has erased the calendars of artists around the world, he noted.
Hagewood, for his part, believes in the artistic community of Port Townsend.
