According to Alamanac.com, in November, the five bright planets – Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury and Venus will be visible. With the exception of Mercury in the eastern dawn, all of the planets dim a bit during the month of November. However, they will still be easily visible.

The planets are generally easily visible, even with light pollution. They look like the brightest “stars” in the night sky. In the evening, Mars and Jupiter appear or rise just after sunset. Look east for Mars and west for Jupiter. As the evening twilight fades, use bright Jupiter to find dark Saturn. Again, according to Alamanac.com, the ringed planet is about the width of two fingers at an arm’s length from the eye east of Jupiter.

You may have noticed that the brilliant Jupiter continues its steady march towards Saturn. The pair are now only visible in the early hours of each night. Look for them to continue to connect with each other every week until their long-awaited reunion in mid-December.

The other two planets Mercury and Venus are morning stars. Venus sinks lower each morning, but is still visible before dawn. You can watch Venus hovering above Mercury from November 8-18, 40 minutes before sunrise, for those with a clear horizon.

According to Seasky.org, on November 10, Mercury will reach its greatest aspect ratio in the west. This is the best time to see Mercury as it will be at its highest point above the horizon in the morning sky. While according to In-The-Sky.org, Mercury’s orbit is closer to the sun than that of the earth, which means it always appears close to the sun and gets lost in the sun’s reflections most of the time. It is only observable for a few weeks each time it reaches the greatest separation from the sun – times called the greatest elongation. This repeats about every three to four months, taking place alternately in the morning and evening skies, depending on whether Mercury is east of the sun or west.

When in the east, it rises and sets shortly after the sun and is visible in the early evening twilight. When west of the sun, it rises and sets shortly before the sun and is visible shortly before sunrise. Looking at Mercury through a telescope before sunrise is tricky and can be dangerous because you don’t want to see the sun through a telescope. It could blind the observer.

Finally, according to Seasky.org, on the night of November 11 and the morning of November 12, the meteor shower of the Northern Taurids will reach its peak. The shower runs from October 20 to December 10 every year. It is a minor, long-lasting meteor shower producing only about five to 10 meteors per hour. This shower, however, is known to produce a higher than normal percentage of shiny fireballs.

The thin crescent moon shouldn’t be a big deal for what could be a really good show. Best viewing will be right after midnight from a dark location away from city lights. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Taurus but can appear anywhere in the sky. Northern Taurids are produced by grains of dust left by the asteroid 2004 TG10.
