Luck always seems to be on my side.

I have no other way to describe it. When I went to Los Angeles for a vacation on March 7, I did not know that a week later, the COVID-19 pandemic would sweep the nation, canceling almost all events and radically changing our way of life.

I had a blast in Hollywood, visited all of my friends and met new ones, and then, it seems, left just in time. It’s amazing that it worked this way. If I had planned my trip a few days later, I should have canceled everything.

I spent four days under the beautiful sun of southern California, stopping at all my favorite restaurants, from El Coyote in Los Angeles to Bob’s Big Boy in Burbank. These places are deeply rooted in the history of show biz. For example, El Coyote is where actress Sharon Tate ate her last meal before the Manson family was murdered. The stand where she and her friends had dinner is still there. My server pointed it out to me.

My adventure started at the JW Marriott Desert Springs, a luxurious resort and spa in the luxurious Palm Desert. It’s about a two-hour drive east of Los Angeles near Rancho Mirage, where the president and Mrs. Ford lived. I always love to go there. Flamingos cross a pond at the main entrance. There is a shopping promenade and a boat ride on the river through the lobby at dinner time. As usual, I enjoyed the ribs party on Saturday evening. It was fun to spot celebrities in the lobby. One night, while relaxing in the lobby and being an observer, I met David Leisure, Christopher McDonald, Richard Kind and Linda Thompson.

In Los Angeles, I saw so many great attractions, from the Hollywood sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame to the Grauman’s Chinese Theater via Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. There is nothing like the palm trees that rise in Beverly Hills. Driving and spotting famous spots is the ultimate Hollywood experience.

One evening I attended was particularly exciting. It was a fundraising lunch for the National Museum of Women’s History. I arrived early to spot celebrities on the red carpet. I saw some of my favorite actresses, including Shantel VanSanten, Andie MacDowell and her daughters Margaret Qualley and Rainey Qualley, Sharon Lawrence, Brianna Brown, Laura Bell Bundy, Molly McCook, Katherine Bailess and Virginia Williams. I even saw actresses and pop singers Aly and AJ Michalka.

It was great to see some of my closest friends. Lauren Foulk is a pop culture fanatic like me and came from San Diego to celebrate her birthday with me. My dear friend Betsy Spina, host on Radio Disney Country, met me one day for lunch.

It was an incredible whirlwind experience, like all of my vacation in Los Angeles. Every day is like a week when I am traveling because I plan so much. I’m on the go, meeting people and making memories. This is my favorite part. Collect memories. The photos I come back with are my treasures.
