Stops stimulate innovations in sports, entertainment and music coverage

With virtually all sports, entertainment and music events closed by the pandemic, the editors of the Daily Herald had to change their focus to keep readers in touch with the leisure activities they enjoy. Here’s how.

When all major, minor and secondary sports have paused their seasons, my first thought was, “No sport? No problem.”

I knew that for a few days there would be stories to be told about what the sports world would do next without further training in the spring and March 26.

I have never been too worried because we have a strong team of journalists and columnists with no shortage of opinions and story ideas. We also have bosses who have a great love of baseball and other sports.

From one of the bosses came the idea of asking our staff daily questions about the life of the sport. This is how Clubhouse Chatter came about, and we have received many comments and suggestions for questions from our print and online audiences.

When a western suburban coach spoke to one of our high school journalists, the end result was that the coach sent a tweet encouraging everyone to subscribe to the Daily Herald.

To me, that summed up some people’s affection for the work we do.

When your entertainment section is called Time out! – and health experts tell everyone to stay – what should newspaper staff do?

Change course, of course.

This is what the publishers and writers of our Friday Time out! Section has made in the past two weeks that cinemas, theaters, restaurants and museums have closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Our theaters may be temporarily dark, but the thirst for entertainment remains – perhaps more than ever. We can think of a few moments in modern memory when we, as a society, needed more entertainment to elevate ourselves, make us laugh and fill the days until we can return to the hobbies we love. more.

So we’ve added a lot of things to do at home. You can read stories about the streaming suggestions, keep your brain sharp with new puzzles, and get information on how suburban restaurants get creative in tough times.

Free time! is now Time out! – with Time In!

We will keep the content coming, while looking forward to the day when we can resume our coverage focused on the suburbs of theater, music, catering and community events.

When bars, restaurants and venues had to close, the loss of concerts on the Chicago and suburban music stages spurred innovation. Artists have started broadcasting more performances from their homes, including links to Venmo, PayPal, and other funding sites to serve as virtual “hints”. We got wind of this very early and started sharing these performances, incorporating a few on Chicago Sound Check (chicagosoundcheck.com) and sharing a lot via the Sound Check Facebook page.

We also publish a weekly list of some major and local live broadcasts in Time out! and online on Friday.

Since shows and our concert schedule were no longer an option, we labeled everything related to music as fair play. I wrote more local releases, focusing more on sharing new songs and videos via Sound Check’s weekly Fresh Check posts, and publicizing the March Spotify playlist.

We also shared in my column some of our favorite music movies and where you can find them, and I’m preparing a roundup of Chicago music podcasts (coming soon).
