Caught in video mashup, Pinsky apologizes for comments on virus | Entertainment
NEW YORK (AP) Famous doctor Drew Pinsky apologized for a series of undisclosed statements in a recent video in which he downplayed the coronavirus and suggested that it was a press-induced panic.
I wish I had understood correctly, but I was wrong, said Pinsky in a video posted this weekend. Pinsky is known as Dr. Drew and for helping people overcome their addiction problems.
Pinsky’s apology was prompted by an online video that brought together clips from a series of appearances he made over a two-month period. It’s a form of storytelling that has grown with the pandemic: the Washington Post made mashups focused on President Trump and Fox News, while Comedy Central released a video targeting conservative figures on Friday.
The Pinsky video surfaced on Twitter, posted by someone called DroopsDr. It was not possible to establish the identity of the person.
The video collects clips from Pinsky on his online show, Ask Dr. Drew, “his podcast Dr. Drew After Dark and other media appearances. Dying from a coronavirus was less than being struck by an asteroid .
On KTLA-TV on March 2, he said he was angry at the press panic over the illness.
Later in the month, speaking of New York, he noted that the subways were much less crowded because city officials were told to avoid taking the train.

In the United States, some 10,000 people have died from the coronavirus. Most infected people have moderate or mild symptoms and recover, but for the elderly and those with underlying conditions this can be fatal.
Apologies, Pinsky noted that he was part of a choir that equated coronavirus to influenza. He said he did not understand the ferocity of the disease and that he had mainly studied the number of flu cases.
Although he did not say the clips were deceptively edited, he noted that in most of his appearances, he also directed viewers to the advice of Dr. Anthony Fauci and the Centers for Disease Control. Pinsky did not immediately return an AP message on Monday.
In a post on the Twitter account, the person who posted the video suggested that the idea of asking Fauci’s advice was probably lost behind Pinsky’s advice.
The Washington Post released a video a few weeks ago that compared Fox News Channel figures like Sean Hannity and Jeanine Pirro made before and after the pandemic. He has also produced videos compiling cases where New York mayor Bill De Blasio and President Donald Trump downplayed the impact of the disease.
Comedy Central’s online video, Heroes of the Pandumic, has already been viewed more than 19 million times, said Ramin Hedayati, digital content manager for The Daily Show.
Although it contains statements from Trump and radio personality Rush Limbaugh, the Comedy Central video focuses on clips from Fox News figures that downplay the disease or suggest that the danger was exaggerated to make Trump look bad.
It felt like the time was right, because the news is going so fast … and we didn’t want people to forget that it had happened, said Hedayati.
The Daily Show has frequently targeted Fox News over the years, but Hedayati said he had trouble remembering any problem where people responded to a segment with such anger at the network.
Although a Fox representative made no comments for the PA, the network rejected the idea that he did not take the coronavirus seriously. The Washington Free Beacon also produced its own video mashup with mainstream media statements about the virus.
Liberal sources and public health officials said the same thing without being criticized, wrote conservative columnist Sharyl Attkisson in response to the Comedy Central video. It’s as if rhetoric is deemed too dangerous or questionable about coronavirus only when it is uttered by conservatives, Trump supporters or other targeted people.
