Some area residents have decided to put stuffed animals in their windows as a fun way to hunt for children who cannot engage in their usual group activities during measures of social departure from coronaviruses.
Groove hunting, a play on the popular children’s song “Let’s go on a bear hunt”, is something new and different that children will look forward to when they get stuck teaching online all day, organizers say.
People around Galveston were already starting to put teddy bears and other stuffed animals in their windows when the Rosenberg Library began promoting the idea, said children’s services manager and children’s librarian Karen Stanley.
The song “Going to Hunt a Bear” teaches kids great motor skills and helps them learn to sound syllables, Stanley said.
It’s a common activity for kids in the library, and sometimes kids will look for toy bears around the library, Stanley said.
Many families go for walks as a safe way to get out of the house during social distance, and letting kids seek out bears is a fun activity, Stanley said.
“It’s scary right now,” Stanley said, “I can have fun.”
Hayley Winkelmann-Price placed a bear and a rabbit in her window so the children could see them from the sidewalk, she said.
“It’s kind of fun for the kids to get them out of the house,” Winkelmann-Price said. “My son is 12, and it’s even fun to find bears in the windows around the neighborhood.”
In some cases, it just might give kids something to look forward to, said Heather Owens, a children’s librarian at the Rosenberg Library.
It’s something people can do in their family unit, staying away from others and even their cars, Owens said.
Many people are chasing bears or other stuffed animals and have responded positively to the library’s digital push to attend, she said.
“A lot of it is trying to maintain a sense of tight community,” Owens said. “We all play the game at once which we are allowed to do separately.”
