Team Fortress 2 crime reports erupted over the weekend, with widespread reports of a “backlog” of the invasion destroying casual matches. Malicious robots are not new to TF2, but these bots are especially frustrating because they not only kill with self-targeting, but also destroy servers when legitimate players try to chase them.

agro, creator of the TX2 podcast KritzKast, tells PC Gamer that he was hit two or three times today personally by “screenwriting kids and their backward robots” while playing a game. He notes that the only way they can deal with cheating bots was by ejecting them, but given that these bots crash the server before ejecting them, players can do nothing. “It’s not a good feeling to know that you’re powerless to do anything about it,” he said.
Today, I ended the connection with a few occasional matches, although it was not obvious if the disconnect was due to bots or something else – no one on the server at the time of the crash pointed out as a potential culprit. It’s possible that those behind the robot started using screen names that aren’t as obvious as “COVID-19 // Lag-Bot.”
However, I did come across one group of villains: Over the course of several matches, fur boats 10, 23, and 27 repeatedly stated that they were annoying to pamper everyone in the chat. As far as I can tell, these robots are just spamming Discord connections, though I could be wrong. (Even if that’s all they do, chasing them causes some psychic damage, and I strongly advise against joining Discord servers advertised by TF2 bots.)
The effects in TF2 bot activities are not unprecedented. “We got into a fight with that before and we will survive,” said KritzKast Discord server member Grampa Swood.
Not everyone is so optimistic. Team Fortress 2 has not been in the center of Valve’s attention for a long time, and confidence in its ability to protect the game is low. “I think the general sentiment in the community is that Valve will eventually take legal action and patch the net code,” Agro said, “but it may be too late for a game that is already struggling to stay relevant.”
