Mumbai police have recorded an initial information report based on a Zero FIR filed by their counterparts in Bihar in connection with the death case of TV actor Akshat Utkarsh, 26, in the capital of Maharashtra. Bihar police had registered a zero FIR in Utkarsh’s hometown of Muzaffarpur, based on his family’s complaint against his girlfriend and sister.
Officials say it is unusual for police in one state to try to investigate a crime that relates primarily to another. But Bihar police departed from this standard practice in August this year when they registered an FIR for incitement to suicide, dishonestly leading to the delivery of goods and breach of trust in the death of actor Sushant. Singh Rajput in Mumbai on a complaint from his father KK Singh.
FIR zero was transferred to Amboli police from Bihar in accordance with procedure. The FIR was registered at Amboli Police Station in Mumbai under Articles 302 (punishment for murder) and 34 (acts committed by several people in pursuit of a common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), according to police officials quoted by the ANI news agency.
Amboli police officials said they were investigating the case and booked a troubled actress and her sister on Thursday for allegedly killing Utkarsh.
Utkarsh was found dead in his rented apartment in the Andheri area of Mumbai on September 27. According to Amboli police officials, he committed suicide and was depressed for lack of work. His family, however, had rejected the requests, claiming that Utkarsh had been murdered. Amboli police initially registered an accidental death certificate (ADR) in connection with the case.
Akshat’s father, Vijaykant Chaudhary, had said in a written complaint that a struggling actor who was a friend of Akshat wanted to marry him. But when he refused to marry her, she killed him with the help of his sister, Amboli police said.
An FIR can be left at any police station regardless of the location of the incident or jurisdiction. The FIR is dropped off at a police station which has no jurisdiction over the incident and is known as “FIR zero”. The zero FIR is then transferred to the appropriate police station, which files an actual FIR and investigates the case.
