Malaysian actor London-based virtual monologues welcome minority voices
London-based Malaysian actress Vinna Law did not allow the Covid-19 pandemic to keep her from continuing to work in the theater.
For the law born in Ipoh, all that is necessary for the theater to be realized is an artist, an audience and a space … be it a virtual space now.
She recently launched Monologues in my room ((Monologues), a series of online theater performances that will feature six to eight new works by actors from around the world.
the Monologues the worldwide open call will end on April 12. This project is a collaboration between the theater company Laws Cognatus and the theater company Rumah based in Singapore / London.
It was really overwhelming at first with news of the loss of jobs, and the theater and film industry had to stop to stop the spread of the virus, recalls Law, 27, in an interview with e- mail.
But two days after her isolation began in mid-March, Law, who was trained at the East 15 Acting School in Essex, had an idea during dinner.
The purpose of this Monologues project is to remind other actors and artists that despite the current physical limitation that is imposed on us, our imagination is limitless. It’s kind of an incentive for us to keep creating, to keep working on our craft and also to celebrate the fact that we live in an age where the world is (digitally) connected, says Law, who currently resides in south London.
Law co-founded Cognatus in 2018 (along with six other international classmates), while Rumah was founded by London-based Singaporean theater designer Nur Khairiyah.
For Monologues, Law encourages original monologues that last between five and 10 minutes. Most importantly, as the title suggests, the monologue should be recorded in the participant’s room. To help guide the creative process, a toolkit for participants is provided.
As Rumah and Cognatus are two companies that defend diversity and minority voices, we would certainly have this in mind during conservation.
However, we will mainly focus on the content of the monologue, the quality of the performance and the relevance to the given circumstances, which creates something that fits well with the space limits we have placed – the bedroom, explains Law .
Notifications on the selected monologues will be sent before April 15 and the works will be posted on Youtube on April 20.
