A glimpse of what’s playing and what’s coming up on the local stages
While the State Theater is locked and the remaining 45th season productions are canceled or rescheduled, the Bay Street Players Young Peoples Theater is rehearsing with aspiring actors and actresses who meet in the virtual world instead of the scene.
Young Peoples Theater director Chasteen Mullins said last week that they had started using Zoom, a video conferencing application, to start rehearsals for “Seussical Jr.” The game was originally scheduled for mid-May, but has been pushed back to June 12-14, although other changes may be made.
“I know many children have been disappointed because many of their school performances have been canceled,” said Mullins. “I thought that at least we could continue rehearsals. This is something that children look forward to.
“It’s new to everyone, it’s something we have never done before. Everyone works through things, and what works and what doesn’t. “
She said last week that they had done the blocking, which shows each actor where they are positioned and where to move on stage. She had several cameras on a cardboard scene model and the actors were represented by paper cutouts which she moved around the scene.
Musical rehearsals begin this week.
She added that some things will have to wait until the order to stay at home is lifted, such as the large-scale music numbers, the construction of the sets, the costumes and the accessories.
“When we come together, our children are very talented and flexible and can accomplish whatever they want to accomplish,” said Mullins.
Although the building is closed, customers are encouraged to donate cash to help cover monthly costs. Subscription holders can donate their unused tickets to the theater to help cover lost revenue.
Production manager Nina Vatter said the board uses Face Time and conference calls to continue operations and prepare for the future.
The programming for the 46th season includes “Moonlight and Magnolias” rescheduled from September 11 to 27, “A Tuna Christmas” from November 13 to 29, “A Christmas Carol” from December 4 to 13, “tick, tick … BOOM ! ” January 8-24, “To Kill a Mockingbird” from April 2 to 18 and the last show of the season with “Mamma Mia!” June 25-July 11.
