Take a fun trip through hell | outdoors
No matter how many times you hike the Hell’s Half Acre trail, you can expect to hear the question, “Are you sure we’re heading in the right direction?”
This is because there are no paths here in the traditional sense. The terrain is broken, streams of lava are dark rocks in every direction. The route is determined by marked poles in the rock every 100 to 300 feet. You walk in the direction of the pillars and continue them for miles upon miles.
There are two lanes on Hell’s Half Acre Lava Trail about 20 miles west of Idaho Waterfall just off U.S. Highway 20. The shorter half-mile trail is marked by blue pillars from the top. A longer path leads to the vent (where all the lava originally spilled out of the ground) and is marked by orange columns. First, hike part of the blue trail before you turn onto the orange trail.
The Blue Trail – a loop near the parking lot – is probably the best deal for a quick hike or for families with young children. The orange lanes generally go south.
We decided to make the day recently and hike all the way up to a 4.5 mile one way hike. Although 9 miles does not seem large, remember that these are miles in lava flow. The surface is rarely even, but mostly broken rock. It’s hard to get ahead and you have to concentrate more on each step. You don’t want to fall on a sharp lava rock. It would be like falling on a broken glass. When it was all over, it seemed like we were hiking 12+ miles.
With that in mind, be careful if you bring your dog on this hike. Your pet needs leather pads.
One of the things that makes hiking fascinating is the diverse terrain. You will go through cracks, strange holes, sloping boards and patches of spruce “forest” twisted into crazy shapes. With all the ups and downs and the occasional trees, sometimes you lose the next pillar that takes you along.
We would just continue to hike in the general direction of the elevated vent on the horizon until we eventually saw the next pillar.
The vent has a crater shape to it with a huge hole about 100 feet deep.
We paused at the edge of the snack crater, then headed to the vent to take photos. Behind the vent facing south, the lava flows seem to last forever. The entire course of Half Acre covers more than 200 square kilometers.
Some people spend the night outside lava flowing. Bring all your water and expect cool nights.
When we started there were only two cars on the trail and we only saw another couple hiking their babies. If the trail parking seems crowded for you to enjoy while socially distanced, continue driving west to Big Southern Butte Volcano and walk along its snowy slopes. You will probably have it mostly on your own.
