‘Labor of love;’ Jacksonville native produces Carter documentary
“Jimmy Carter: President of Rock & Roll”
9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3 on CNN
The title of “Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President” is a bit misleading.
Of course, there are plenty of rockers in the documentary, which airs at 9 p.m. Sunday on CNN. The Allman Brother Band, Bob Dylan and Jimmy Buffett are all there, recounting how they helped put the Georgia peanut grower in the White House in 1976,
But there are also a lot of stars from other musical genres. Willie Nelson is in it. The same goes for Dizzy Gillespie, Garth Brooks, Johnny Cash and Aretha Franklin.
The film, which hit theaters in the fall and is available for $ 4.99 via Amazon Prime, chronicles how the musicians aided Carter’s presidential campaign, how they embraced him during his presidency, and how the connection deepened Carter’s music influenced almost everything he did.
This is the first movie in which Chris Farrell has been involved. Farrell, who works in the financial industry in New York and was a producer for “Jimmy Carter: Rock & Roll President,” grew up in Jacksonville and attended Episcopal High School and Stetson College. He said he still had family and friends in the area.
“If it hadn’t been for COVID, we would have been there three or four times this year,” Farrell said last week in a phone interview.
Farrell said he had been looking for a creative project for years and started working on a film about the roots of the Allman Brothers Band, the iconic southern rock band that formed in the Riverside neighborhood of Jacksonville. At first, however, it became clear that the Allmans were not the story he wanted to tell; Carter was.
As a producer, he said, it was his job to “get things done,” which included raising funds, hiring a director and finding an audience for the film. . He even created a production company, Not Just Peanuts, for the project.
“It was definitely a labor of love,” Farrell said. “We had some really dark times. We were running out of money. I had open heart surgery and almost died while making the film.”
Work on the film began in 2017, despite the setbacks he said he thought it was a story people needed to know.
“It’s almost like Ididnt haveachoce. No matter what the obstacle, I was so passionate and convinced of the story that I felt had to be told.”
The central theme of the film is how Carter used music to get things done. When he needed money for his campaign, it was musicians who mobilized and organized fundraising concerts. When he needed to do a bit of politics, Carter wasn’t afraid of musical connections to get things done, like the time a senior Chinese official visited the United States and Carter sent him to Nashville to meet. Johnny Cash.
Carter has hosted a wide range of concerts at the White House, including jazz, country and blues performances. He was raised on gospel music (the film includes Aretha Franklin’s superb performance of “God Bless America” upon his inauguration) and has embraced music in all its forms throughout his life, Farrell said. .
“The thing that we got is that rock is not just a style of music, it’s kind of an attitude,” Farrell said. “Jimmy Carter’s youthink as a cardigan-wearing type, big smile, aw-shucks, but he was a very independent thinker. Thatsveryrock and roll.”
The hardest part of editing the film was getting the musicians to sit down and be interviewed. The Allman Brothers’ Chuck Leavell was the last to accept an interview. Willie Nelson, U2’s Bono, Jimmy Buffett, Nile Rodgers, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Paul Simon and Larry Gatlin are all in there.
But the “white whale” was Bob Dylan, who provides the most Jacksonville moment in the whole movie. There was a big fundraising gig in the summer of 76 at the Gator Bowl, featuring .38 Special, Charlie Daniels and other bands from the South (Lynyrd Skynyrd was supposed to play but pulled out at the last minute), but this show does not. t even get a mention in the movie.
But towards the end, Dylan talks about Carter’s humble roots and begins to quote Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” lyrics, which match perfectly.
“As complicated as it is, at the end of the day, the president is pretty straightforward. He has many different sides, but he’s just a good person at his heart.”
Farrell said Dylan’s comment was impromptu.
“Dylans Dylan, he’s very elusive and hard to get,” Farell said. “He was very caring. Hean and the President have a very special relationship. It’s not like we scripted him. I got chills.”
