DEAR MISS MANNERS: Is Voicemail Dead? I can understand why friends and family may not leave a message, assuming that when I see their number in my “missed calls” list, I will get in touch. But I assumed I would get a voicemail for something more formal, and I am now wrong twice in a month.

The first time, my computer was at a local store for repairs. The technicians planned to call me with a quote. Several days passed before finally calling them.

They had my quote, but they said they “tried to call me”. I checked my missed calls and finally matched them with a call three days ago. (It was not the number I expected them to call.) There was no voicemail. They never tried to call again.

Shortly after, I ordered glasses from a large chain. It was a special order, which should take several days, but I was told that I would receive a call when they were ready. Some time later, wondering if I would ever have my glasses, I discovered that history had repeated itself: there was a missed call from the place of the glasses; no voicemail, no call back.

Am I the one who is offline here, waiting for a voice message, especially from a company? Is it just assumed that when we see a missed call, we will call back the number to find out what we missed? Imagine how many telemarketers and robots I would reach if I called all the unknown numbers that appear on my phone! Am I wrong?

SWEET READER: We have so many different ways of communicating these days that nobody seems to be able to reach anyone.

Some people do not use the phone feature of their phone. Some do not send email and others do not send SMS. Many do not write or read letters on paper. And now you report the companies that don’t use voicemail.

There are so many possibilities that it might be easier to reach some people by riding and lowering the horse.

Miss Manners is afraid that there will be notations in the address lists, indicating which method to use for whom. You can start by asking these stores which means of communication they prefer, then use it to harass them until they tell you when your goods are ready.

DEAR MISS MANNERS: Approaching heavy wooden doors to a local university building, my husband and I were a few feet behind a man in a wheelchair who bypassed the door open button. My husband, 84, said, “I’m going to have the door.”

The man addressed us in profane language, grabbed the doorknob, yanked it open and headed down a hallway. He then shouted, “Yeah, help the man – disabled.”

We were blown away. Shouldn’t we have been trying to help him?

Opening a door for someone else, for whatever reason – they have their hands full, you got there first – is not an insult. By viewing it as such, the person you referred to only makes life more unpleasant for themselves and for others.
