Bright and candy-colored, though beautifully dark when needed, writer / director Emerald Fennells, debuting in a subversive feature film with Confidence (out of four; rated R; in theaters now, available Friday on VOD) breaks through gleefully line the line between romantic comedy and revenge thriller while twisting the ropes. Boosted by a complex and extraordinary performance of Carey mulligan, Young Woman explores topical themes like toxic masculinity and sexual assault, but doesn’t let go in terms of dark humor and sinister satisfaction either.
