Differences between Netflix’s “ Bridgerton ” and Julia Quinns books

If you’re still obsessed with Shondaland’s first Netflix series, Bridgerton, you’re not alone. The blockbuster period drama takes place in Regency-era England and follows the high-class Bridgerton family as the eldest daughter, Daphne, enters the marriage market. It is based on a series of Julia Quinn books, the first season drawing primarily from The duke and me, the inaugural book in the series. Although, there are many differences in the way the stories play out on screen compared to Quinn’s original words.

For starters, the diversity present in the cast of the Netflix series is not exactly representative of English high society at the time, considering slavery did not stop there until 1833 well into the Regency era. But his omission from the show gives viewers a chance to dive into the drama-filled storylines, as they could have happened if the story was a little nicer.

Bridgerton showrunner Chris Van Dusen recently spoke to Oprah Magazine on how they adapted the story for the small screen. “I feel like there will always be some differences with the course material with any adaptation, but I’m sure fans of the books will see all the elements they love on screen.” , did he declare. Van Dusen then noted that he wanted the series to reflect today’s world. “You know, even though the show is set in the 19th century, I still wanted modern audiences to identify with it.”

Author Julia Quinn also spoke with the publication of the changes. “It’s not a word-for-word adaptation, and it shouldn’t be. I never expected it,” Quinn said. “The characters are absolutely true to who they were, and the backstory is absolutely true … I remember reading that very first script, and seeing how they did certain things to structure it differently. … it was clear to me that they had done it in the perfect way. “

Waiting for season 2 of Bridgerton, check out 10 story changes below. Warning: this post is full of spoilers.

How Simon and Daphne meet

In Episode 1, Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings, cross paths following an uncomfortable encounter between Daphne and her relentless and loathsome suitor Nigel Berbrooke. However, in The duke and me, Simon spies on Daphne as she talks with Berbrooke and comes to her aid after hitting him. This altercation does not occur in the series until Episode 2.

Simon’s stutter is not gone

The Duke of Hastings’ experience of overcoming his vocal stuttering as a young child plays out similarly in the books and in the Netflix series, but in the books it is still present until adulthood. It even complicates his relationship with Daphne as he does not want to stutter in front of her or pass it on to their possible children. Finally, Simon ends up trusting Daphne enough for her to see him for who he is, which was a major breakthrough for their relationship.

While Simon’s shirtless scenes in the boxing ring are a highlight of the Shondaland series, they are missing from Quinn’s books. Simon doesn’t get close to many people in the books due to his stuttering, but since that script is missing from the streaming series, the Bridgerton the writers added boxing intrigue to fill its place. However, it’s not entirely improbable that the Duke of Hastings enjoys spending time in the ring given the Regency era. was the peak boxing in england.

Anthony knew Simon and Daphne’s lie

In the books, Anthony is not as protective and bossy as a brother of Daphne. In fact, Daphne and Simon tell him about their ruse, which he agrees to keep a secret as long as the two are never alone together. But when he catches them hanging on in the garden, he becomes furious and challenges Simon to a duel.

Daphne is not new to the wedding market.

While the Netflix series follows Daphne as she begins her search for a longtime partner, the book series finds her in her second year in the marriage market. The Queen isn’t quite so in love with Daphne, and she certainly doesn’t call her the “diamond of the season”. However, a similar theme in the show and in the books is how Daphne struggles to find a suitor and enters into a pseudo-relationship with Simon to improve her chances.

Controversial sex scene was more disturbing

Daphne and Simon’s disagreement over having children is still an important part of their relationship in The duke and me. In the Netflix series, after realizing that Simon withdrawing during sex could prevent him from getting pregnant, Daphne takes him on top of him and controversially assures that he will not withdraw from her despite he asks her to wait.

Critics have discussed how this scene deals with consent, but in the book it’s an even more murky situation: Simon is drunk and asleep when Daphne forces him to end up in her. Readers interpreted the scene as outright rape, and Reg-Jean Page said Oprah Magazine that he “was very happy that we had a different scene on the TV show than in the book.”

Mrs Featherington is a widow

In the series of books, Mr. Featherington does not exist and he is certainly not addicted to gambling. Instead, Ms. Featherington is already a widow. Therefore, the story of her husband dying at the end of the season and leaving the family financially unstable is not on the books.

No one inherits House Featherington.

Judging by Ms Featherington’s bad reaction to anyone who is the heir to her late husband’s estate, this is not someone she loves. Because there is no premise for it in Quinn’s books, the fate of their estate is a significant season 1 cliffhanger.

Marina Thompson’s relationship with Colin

The book series barely follows Marina Thompson. And when it is mentioned in the fifth book, To Sir Phillip, with love, she is already dead and is only the late wife of Prince Phillip. This means that her entire storyline, including her pregnancy and relationship with Colin, has been strictly added for Netflix.

Many characters are unique to Netflix

Lord Featherington isn’t the only character created specifically for the Netflix series. Quinn doesn’t mention Siena Rosso in the books, but Siena seems to take inspiration from Maria Rosso, an opera performer who appears in the Anthony-centric The viscount who loved me delivered. Benedict Bridgerton is an artist in Quinn’s books, but he does not attend any arts night and therefore never meets Sir Henry Glanville, a character created for the Shondaland series. In the books, Daphne never meets a prince Prince Frederich only appears on screen.

Another character created by Netflix: the love interest of Benedict and the city’s must-see seamstress, Geneviève Delacroix. Her only love interest on paper is Sophie Beckett, which leaves viewers wondering where her relationship with the beloved seamstress will go in the seasons to come.

Finally, although he does exist in real life and reign in England when the series takes place, Queen Charlotte does not appear in the books. Instead, it was added to the Bridgerton Van Dusen universe for the show. “What really struck me about the books from the start is that it was the opportunity to marry story and fantasy in a really exciting and interesting way,” said the showrunner. Oprah Magazine. “So in Queen Charlotte, that was the story. And then he thought of these fantastic scenes and situations to put her in that were really fun to write, too.” Unlike many other non-white characters, it is historically probable that the queen was black.

Lady Whistledown’s identity remained a secret

The Penelope-is-Lady-Whistledown reveal came as a shock to fans of the books, who recall Quinn did not reveal the identity of the gossip author until Romance Mr. Bridgerton, the fourth novel in the series. In turn, the queen never asks Eloise to conduct an investigation.
