Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport steps up cleanup efforts following virus – WSVN 7News | Miami News, Weather, Sports

FORT LAUDERDALE-HOLLYWOOD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, FLA. (WSVN) – Lots of people will be flying to South Florida soon for the Spring Break and the Ultra Music Festival, so South Florida airports are cleaning and disinfecting to prevent coronavirus from 39; enter.

Airport disinfection efforts have intensified across the country. At Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, employees wipe surfaces twice as often.

"We do the handrails because people's hands are constantly touching them," said an airport worker.

Employees wipe rails, wash windows, and disinfect seats four times a day to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

"We are actually increasing our frequency of cleaning and disinfection," said Stalin Flores, head of the airport cleaning crews. "We went from two to almost four times per shift."

With as many as 80,000 travelers passing through the airport in one day, germs can spread everywhere. For some, this means wearing masks.

"We don't know if this will protect us, but yes, we are trying to be safe," said one traveler.

For others, it means traveling with personal wipes.

"It has certainly been a big effect on, like, the country and things like that," said Carmen Arrendondo, "but I don't want to live in fear with that. I just want to be more careful."

President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence held a press conference on Wednesday. They said they were encouraged that travelers across the country seemed cautious.

Trump also met with airline officials at the White House and told reporters that the passengers were being watched.

"When people arrive from certain regions, we do checks, not only at the takeoff site but at the landing site," said Trump.

Airplanes, as well as airports, are also cleaned daily.

"We have intensified our efforts to ensure the planes are clean and disinfected," said Gary Kelly, CEO of Southwest Airlines.

However, some travelers are not at all worried.

"I just think people are all excited about it," said one traveler. "It's the flu, by and large."

Airport officials promise to do their part and encourage travelers to do their own while monitoring the spread of the virus.

"I have no problem with that," said airport spokesman Greg Meyer. "I would encourage my family or anyone to travel anywhere, anytime right now, as long as it is not limited by the (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) or the United States government. "
