Roger Corman launches short film competition during quarantine
The prolific producer and director hopes to judge two-minute projects made at home.
Roger Corman, prolific director and producer credited with discovering talents like Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola and Peter Bogdanovich, kicked off a quarantine film festival on Wednesday to judge short films made while potential Hollywood directors take refuge at their home.
Corman on his Instagram page described the film competition as “the first (and hopefully the last) Corman quarantine film festival”. The rules invite filmmakers to make a short film inside their house or their backyard with what they have on hand as they isolate themselves from the coronavirus pandemic.
The short video should be less than two minutes long and the cast can be drawn with the family “or whoever is with you”. Prospective directors are requested to use their mobile phone camera and the available lighting around the house.
The “Godfather of Independent Cinema” will accept video submissions on social media for the next two weeks, using the hashtag #CormanChallenge. “History can be anything you imagine,” says Corman, the winning film to be featured on his social media and website.
“We will make a trailer for the film and its director will receive a signed certificate from me as well as a prize for the best photo for the first and last Corman quarantine film festival,” adds the legend of film B. Corman also challenged Hollywood filmmakers who isolate themselves to participate in his quarantine-themed festival, including horror directors Eli Roth, Andy Muschietti, Leigh Whannell and Guillermo del Toro.
In addition to producing and directing more than 400 films, Corman founded New World Pictures in the 1970s, which became the largest independent film distribution company in the country. His film credits include The Pit and the Pendulum, The Wild Angles, Little Shop of Horrors, Death Race 2000 and Rock ‘n’ Roll High School.
