Hospital staff treating the outspoken Duke of Edinburgh are unlikely to view the groom as an ideal patient, a royal author has said.

Penny Junor joked that doctors at London’s King Edward VIIs Private Hospital probably wouldn’t want him on their shift due to his dislike of people who argue over him.

Philip has so far spent two nights in the hospital for an undisclosed reason, although it is not related to the coronavirus.

Ms Junor told BBC Breakfast: I think he can be pretty blunt and I think if he felt like people were arguing about him he could be pretty blunt about it.

He’s a man who doesn’t want us to fuss about his 100th birthday, so the fact that he’s in the hospital and fussing with him is going to really irritate him.

The 99-year-old duke was admitted on Tuesday evening for observation and rest and is said to be in a good mood.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Wednesday sent his best wishes to Philip as he undergoes a period of rest.

The Duke, who will turn 100 on June 10, received a coronavirus vaccine in January.

It is understood that a doctor was called after Philip felt unwell for a short time and was driven to hospital, where he entered unassisted as an elective admission.

The Duke spent the last lockdown with the Queen at Windsor Castle, where the monarch continued to work normally.

Buckingham Palace previously said in a statement: His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London on Tuesday evening.

The admission of the dukes is a precautionary measure, on the advice of the doctor of His Royal Highness, after a malaise.

The Duke is expected to stay in the hospital for a few days of observation and rest.

It is understood that the decision to admit Philip was taken with great caution.

The Duke last had a hospital stay when he spent four nights in the King Edward VIIs in December 2019, where he was treated for a pre-existing illness and was discharged on Christmas Eve.
