Coronavirus: First Death in California, L.A. County Declares Emergency
Six new cases in Los Angeles County were linked to a known source of exposure, officials said.
Los Angeles County declared an emergency on Wednesday with the announcement of six new cases of coronavirus. This brings the county total to seven. The news came shortly before California announced the state's first death in the midst of the epidemic.
Health officials in Northern California say the victim was an elderly man who had other health problems. He died Wednesday in a hospital in Roseville where he was isolated. Officials say the man was likely exposed to the virus during a February trip on a Princess cruise ship from San Francisco, Mexico.
The Los Angeles County cases were confirmed Tuesday evening and all of the new cases were linked to a known source of exposure, officials said. The age, sex and location of the patients were not specified.
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has received Centers for Disease Control & Prevention test kits. The health department will monitor and support these patients in isolation (quarantine), officials said.
San Francisco and Orange County have already declared similar health emergencies.
County health officials, as well as the mayor of Los Angeles, Eric Garcetti, have implored residents to wash their hands often and avoid physical social interactions, such as hugs and handshakes. They also said that anyone with any illness, no matter how minor, should stay at home.
County officials have also asked businesses and schools to understand employees who want to work from home.
Mayor Garcetti did not mince his words, saying that more cases are inevitable and that it is the responsibility of each resident to take appropriate precautions, which, he said, included hand washing and reduced physical social interactions.
County officials said hospital staff and rescuers were being trained on how to treat any infected or suspected infected patient.
