South Korea’s Na Hong-jin to produce Thai horror ‘the Medium’

The feature film will be directed by Thai hitmaker and horror maestro Banjong Pisanthanakun (“Shutter”, “Pee Mak”) and Finecut will launch sales at the next European Film Market.

An Asian Horror Dream Team has formed aroundThe way, a supernatural horror film to be co-produced by South Korea’s Showbox and Thai studio GDH 599.

Na Hong-jin from Korea, the visionary author behind Lamentations, The yellow sea and The hunter, will produce the film based on an original story he developed. The way is Na’s first effort as a producer, working under his Northern Cross production banner.

The wayis directed by Thai horror maestro Banjong Pisanthanakun, best known internationally for his directorial debut in 2004 Shutter, which has been remade in multiple languages, including the 2008 Hollywood remake under the same name. In the years that followed he achieved Thai hits in various other genres including rom-comHello Stranger and horror romance Pee mak, which went on to become Thailand’s biggest domestic box office hit with $ 33 million.

Now in post-production, The way is described as a horrific story of shaman inheritance in the Isan region of Thailand. But the goddess who seems to have taken possession of a family member does not turn out to be as benevolent as she seems.

GDH 599 has been Thailand’s most successful film studio for the past decade. Recent hits include a high school thriller Evil genius(2017), which brought in $ 3.4 million in Thailand but an additional $ 41 million in China.

International sales for The way are managed by Seoul-based sales company Finecut, which will launch the film at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin. Finecut previously handled Na’s earlier work The hunter and Lamentations, both of which made much-discussed premieres at Cannes.
