Dutch poet refuses to translate Gorman’s works | Entertainment

THE HAGUE, The Netherlands (AP) A writer who was chosen to translate the work of American poet Amanda Gorman into Dutch returned the mission following criticism that a white author was selected to translate the words of a black woman who is the youngest inaugural poet in United States history.

Marieke Lucas Rijneveld, who became the youngest writer to win the International Booker Prize with his novel The Discomfort of Evening, ”the decision announced Friday in a Twitter post.

A Dutch translation of The Hill We Climb, the poem that Gorman recited with great success on the inauguration of US President Joe Biden, was to be published at the end of March by the publisher Meulenhoff.

I am shocked by the outcry over my involvement in spreading Amanda Gorman’s message, and I understand people who feel hurt by Meulenhoff’s choice to ask me, said Rijneveld, who writes poetry as well as novels.
